Question 6 speed HD Trans.

Looking to see if people are having problems with Harley 6 speeds chattering at low speeds making it difficult to stay in the friction zone?
I have a 2011 Road King with 20,000 miles. No problems untill serviced. Now I find it almost impossible to stay in the friction zone at low speed turning or going in a straight line. The Dealer say that this is a problem Harley came up with when they switched to
6 speeds and it cannot be frixed.

The fact that I put 20,000 miles on this bike with no problem untill it was serviced does not regtister with the service people.

Thanks Tom

I have no experience with 6 speed transmissions, but what the dealer said doesn't sound quite right to me.

To add to the problem the only way to reach HD is by snail mail. An independent shop seems to believe HD uses to light an oil in the trans. Not sure what that will do to the warranty.

My trans works perfectly. What oil did they refill your trans with?

I requested the Dealer to upgrade to what HD deemed to be the best which was syn3.

That's what I use in all three holes and I'm actually impressed with how well my trans works. Every morning that I ride to work, I take a hard right and a hard left to put my bike in it's parking spot, dragging the brake and slipping the clutch thru the whole manuever and have had no chattering problems.

There have been issues with the 6 speed, but the involve failures. People who put a ton of money into the motor to make more power and then do not upgrade the transmission are surprised when the the grenades. Yours is different. Sounds more like a clutch issue.

It does sound like he may have plates warped or something like that.

+1 on the clutch, get your hands on a service manual and see what kind of oil HD says to use.

No issues with my 2009 Ultra - 34,000 miles. Check the compensator; you may need to replace it. There are a few threads on this on the Harley forums.

Default problem solved

Thanks to all who offered help.

My problem was not in the transmission but in the throttle by wire.
Some worn contacts in the grip.

The problem was solved by Gator Harley in Leesburg Fl. even tho they are
not the dealer that sold and has serviced my 2011 road king.

The Dealer that sold the bike and even after 4 visits insisted there was no problem; my "bike road like all harleys" was Crystal River Harley.

So Gator Harley in Leesbur Fl. kept up the good job your pride really shows and I look forward to spending some money in your establishment in the near future.

Wow, I would not have guessed that. The mechanic who diagnosed that has some skills.

So I'm assuming that it was more an engine hesitation than the clutch/trans. malfunctioning. Good on the mechanic.

I have an 07 Ultra ( first year for the six speed transmission)I don't run it that hard, but I don't baby it either Last fall The transmission started making noises when I started to go thru the Gears I thought it might be the clutch bearing I took it to the shop and low and behold the tranny had to get rebuilt, at the time I had 55,000 miles on it. My mechanic called me just to check up to see how it was doing and he said that he had three more 07's in the shop that had to get rebuilt Have to wait and see if there is a recall on that year

This is where your clutch just begins to engage. It is used typically in slow speed parking lot type riding or when making sharp U-turns. Basically your bike is moving but you can still rev the motor and the bike wont go any faster; keeps you from falling over when performing slow speed riding.
