Default 05 gxsr 750 tire question?

My cousin has a gxsr 750 and is getting new tires, he just crashed because be bought a used rear racing tire, his road rash has made him a believer in buying new good tires, what is the best set of tires for him to get, something good for cornering and a lot of traction. He wants a fat as possible tire for the rear.

Fat tires and being good for cornering aren't exactly the best. Really fat tires are for looks alone (or performance if you're drag racing). If he wants the best performance, tell him to stick with the stock tire size.

From what I understand, race tires (although softer compound when fresh) will harden after having been ridden hard and cooled down. So like stated above, get a set of stock size and compound.....I believe on the 750 it's a 180 rear and 120 front.

I wouldn't go any higher than a 190 on the rear if you're actually getting out and hitting the corners. The fatter the tire after that, the less cornering ability you're going to have.

I prefer Pilot Powers.

You're going to have different compounds for different types of riding, along with different tread patterns. I'd go to a place that knows what they're talking about, and ask them as many questions as you possibly can. That's the best way to get what you need.

I have the Pilot Power 2ct's on my Buell Cyclone. I think they're great tires for my riding style.

RIDER NOTES:

“This tire is difficult to figure out. It did everything well but nothing really stood out. Side grip was good, not as good as the Avon VP2s, but way better than the Shinkos. The front tire steered predictability and the tires felt nicely balanced between being soft and firm. You could feel that the tires employed multiple compounds. The sides were soft and squirmy feeling while the center we’re much more solid. Feel was excellent from this tire—made it very entertaining to spin-up the rear tire exiting corners. High-speed stability wasn’t that impressive, and down as compared to the BT-016s and Rossos.”
If you compare the numbers, at the bottom of the page, you'll see they're really close to some heavy hitters in the tire industry.

How do you know the race tire caused him to crash? It seems he doesn't know much about tires in the first place so I have to doubt the tire was the issue. A 180/55 would be the best on that bike if cornering is in mind. Just out of curiosity, why does he want a big tire? To look cool?

Key point and limiting factor would be the max width tire that can be fitted to the rim. Radials require specific rim widths to be safe and work properly.

On the other hand if your buddy wants the best for cornering, my bet is on what Suzuki put on the bike in the first place.

What the heck, it's fun to spout off a bit anyway. You never know who's looking for the first time. I had a guy who happens to live near me, as we found out, that posted on a two year old thread on the Zephyr. He caught some flack for posting on an old thread, but it got him the knowledge he wanted... and we got to find that each other had the same general bike and could help each other. Then probably go do some riding around here.

go with stock size tires.. I'm sure those engineers who designed the bikes know what they're doing..
