Exclamation 171 mph on a katana 06 600 ?

someone told me that the katana 600 06 has a govornor that can be taken out. Has anyone else heard this or know it to be true. I was told that with the gonornor out you could top out at 171 mph. Where would it be.

Probably has a rev limiter. If I knew i wouldn't say though.

I just wanted a little more acceleration to keep up with some buddys.
I've never been over 120 mph and I've had the bike for 6 months.

In that case a rev limit removal won't help. What you can do is go with a larger back sprocket or 1 tooth smaller on the front one. That will give you lower gearing which will give you more acceleration but will lower your top speed which as you say you haven't got to anyways. That's one route. The other is an aftermarket exaust, preferably one of quality because IMO cheap pipes just make bikes loud, a jet kit if it has carbs or an aftermarket controler if injected along with a dyno tune up.

Why would you want to drive (guide) a motorcycle 171 mph, you must have a death wish. Unless you are racing on a track with other experienced racers 171 is crazy.

thanks for the help. I'll look into the jet kit I know the bike is carbed. Your both right 171 is insane, but a little accel is alright.

Stick to changing out the rear sprocket; changing the front one out causes more stress on your chain (it has to wrap around a tighter circumference).

Removing the rev limiter won't make you accelerate faster. It will only allow it to rev higher. Motorcycles don't have rotary engines so allowing it to rev higher won't necessarily increase power.

The rev limiter was put in place to keep the engine from reving higher than the valve train and pistons can support. Removing it without upgrading the valve springs and keepers at minimum is a recipe for an expensive repair bill. Riding fast enough to reap the benefit of removing the rev limiter on a public road way is a recipe for having a friend/loved one meet you in the morgue.

My advice, leave it as is unless you are planning on some track time. Even then unless you are a seasoned rider, having that extra little bit up at the top of the tach, you'll never get there anyway.

+1 on what ReconLdr said.

And there is NO way a Katana 600 could hit 150, much less 171. That bike is heavy as heck and makes less than 80 HP.

Hey now...it's like...85...ish...

That being said, 130 is pretty much max on the Kat, and not because it's out of revs.

You will NOT keep up with (in a straight line) any even remotely modern 600 supersport on a 600 Katana (even the 750 is iffy there). If you're a better rider you can catch him in the curves, but raw power and maximum speed are not what a Katana was built for.

It's a 500+- lb sporty touring bike for cryin' out loud. Ask your supersport buddies how they feel after a 2 hour ride Kats are comfy!

Swapping out the back sprocket is your best bet, imo. It'll be cheaper than exhaust/tuning, and will give you more "go-fast" feel. The only plus I see to going the exhaust route is that you'll get a new sound, which could be good, could be bad.

Like stated above, your best bet is to change gearing. The rev limiter is there for a reason. Besides, on a 2006 machine I doubt it is a "device". It is probably a setting in the engine control module. This is not usually a setting that is changeable by the user.

I think it would take more than 80-85 hp to reach 171 m.p.h. You could probably figure it out from this:

Here's a video

+ YouTube Video

made by a guy who changed the gearing on his Harley-Davidson XR1200 (90 hp, 570 lb) so it would go 140 m.p.h., but he burned out his clutch. The Katana would likely be in that ballpark.

Without a lot more horsepower, the only way you're going to go faster is to ride like this:

.
And blow up - sticking all eight intake valves into the piston...

Besides a stock Katana, rev limiter or not, won't do 171. Takes too much power to overcome the aerodynamic drag.
