Yes they are producing the bikes as are any builder/customizer, but the term production is an acronym for mass produced.

I don't know how old you are but extended forks are most definately not a west coast thang, it's a time era thang. As a kid growing up in the sixties all customized cruisers had extended forks. Bobbers are a very recent genre, and isn't bobbing (cutting) the same as chopping (cutting). My current ride used to be a bobber, and the whole premis for a bobber is "if it don't make it go faster, take it the f**k off".Visit S. FL. sometime and you'll see more bikes with extended forks than you can shake a stick at.

As far as the road conditions are concerned, Fl. is waaaay ahead of Ca. in this department. Ca. may have better roads than La. but they are still ridiculously inadequate, take a ride on hwy. 99 sometime. If you will read my thread "Deer Jumper" in "bike stories" it mentions I've ridden my Bobber/Chopper across the country and back so I know of what I speak about the road conditions.

As for customized, if I hang a Gremlin bell on an otherwise stock bike it's now customized, as in following a custom. For that matter, the standard custom is to purchase a bike from one of the makers of mass production bikes, so by defenition alone these are the true custom bikes. What we ride are modifieds if anything other than stock. Even if it's only an after market windshield, it's still modified. And in the 60's the custom modification was to extend the forks, and the custom was to call these modifications choppers, west coast or east coast.

It's only a name, call it what ever you want, personally I like a bike with a nice set of choppers.
Well here we go, sorry you seem to be taking a defensive position to my post. Perhaps because I used your comment as a generic example. I'm not here to pick fly $hit outta pepper but I would like to express a few observations as long as you brought them up. OCC has been in the business of building production bikes for awhile now ( the Wolverine, K2, Cole-Met, Tex-Inst. and Mountain Creek to name a few). Their shop is just down the Northway from one of my shops.
As far as how long I've been around? I've been a builder since the late 60's on both coasts (registered with NHTSA, EPA & SAE) and what I wrote was base on my observations and experiences as a rider and builder over the decades.
I agree with you that the term "Bobber" has gained prevalence in most recent years but the term itself has been around at least since post WWII.
My reference to road conditions was comparing the western states to the northeastern states. I'm not sure how FL. got into conversation but, as long as you bring it up, I grew up here. St. Pete to be exact and I currently live and have one of my shops here in S. Florida. Trust me, I know what a pot hole is. LOL.
Again, terminology can be a convoluted thing. What one term used to mean yesterday can mean something else entirely tomorrow. Observations over the years can also be skewed much like looking at a painting. No two people will see the same thing as the other does. Remember, opinions are like a$$ holes....everybody's got one. You don't have to agree with mine nor do I have to agree with yours either. I believe we can agree that, no matter what we call it, backyard engineers have come up with some very innovative concepts for motorcycles over the years that we all can appreciate and admire.

Hey Capt., The only real builders are the do it yourselfers. If you want a bike to stir your soul every time you ride or look at it, it must come from your own soul.

As I said previously, OCC is producing bikes, and not just one offs, but they are in no way MASS producing them. As in Honda, Harley, Yamaha, etc. Big difference.

As far as Florida is concerned, I could be mistaken but I believe it's on the East coast. And I could be mistaken again but didn't you say east coast verses west coast concerning the chopper thang? Just sayin.

Stirring the pot one more time. HAAAAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Hey, I would really like to see that pepper trick, hope you can show it to me sometime. I bet you must have practiced that for many hours to be able too tell the difference. That must be some fuuuny $hit.

Choppers vs bobbers, meh... custom is what you need to run... and by that I mean your own custom... "If your going to ride a bike you have to make it your own" even something as simple as paint can make it your own bike.

As far as "real choppers" that this article began as... I couldn't afford to buy a "custom" from a store either (even tho my opinion is you can't buy a custom you have to build it) and I took a liking to doing for myself... now understand I have the mechanic skills of a Horse.. but anything i cant handle i take it in. Mine? '74 Kawi Z1 in a Santee frame. It started as a streetfighter (took all the plastic and big seat and fenders off) then became a custom (Santee frame, Big block kit) then .... hmm well general consensus, long forks= chopper... so 6" over forks and a bit more rake. ahhh ridin

um need more posts tho in order to paste a pic

Cheers

Unfortunately, No ! we had too many complications with the scamming azz insurance co and the settlement didn't get paid by them ....they just kept finding loopholes ! so I finally went to a lawyer and he said after he read all the pages of mumbo jumbo .....that it was a policy that only paid on loss of limbs or eyesight ! $hitt ! Just my rotten luck ! .....but at least her surgery went well and she's back home .....just gotta have to watch her dealing with her pain and "walker" stage she has to endure as she heals ! The hip replacement surgery is brutal and they have to hammer and grind on bone ! they explained tat it would be a slow process of healing !

I'm getting a picture,...yes, yes, I'm seeing a hardtail conversion with a springer seat in your future.

Looks great so far,...those older exposed inline fours looked mean.

Martin

Hey Bad,...sorry to hear that. Wish the little lady a speedy recovery for me and hope we ride some twisties together soon.

Already put this in my help tread but seems fitting here.

Been thinking Bobber for the Triumph so I've done some quick and dirty photo edits to get the look...ish

What do ya think? Bars might be a bit high, not really into apes but seems to work

Looks great,...but some lower bars would be much more fitting to the style in my opinion.

Here's one my buddy built out of a 79 CB750. He refers to his as a bobber. I guess either way, chopper or bobber, they're still pretty cool.

The old world comes back...ingenuity, cost cut backs and then a penchant for design. I remember on bicycles we used to cut the forks off one bike and hammer / extend them onto the existing forks. .it was cool.

best,

Nice to see talk about choppers as they really are, not 300mm-rear-wheel, raked-to-the-moon monstrosities.

Yup, I hear them talking about riding an "old school" chopper, then I look at it and it is no more that a "retro" look-alike! I found one from the 60's, an old piglet. Hoping to be able to get it.
