I'm not a fan of hanging around semi tractor trailers. Here's my take:

Had one of those semi's shuck some rubber while I was making a pass in LA.
I just dodged to the outside of my lane and hit the throttle. The piece of rubber might not have hit me anyway ... but my reaction on the bike was just total instinct. You just see something black coming across the freeway ... and SWERVE! It's disturbing when pieces of rubber start flying like that :-) Thanks for explaining why that happens. Had no idea that they re-tread their tires. dT Last edited by distantThunder; 06-28-2012 at 11:34 PM.. |

MythBusters did a show on disintegrating retreads and I'm pretty sure they used a motorcyclist (Buster) as their guinea pig. I suspect it may be available on their website. (Too lazy to look it up right now.)
Happy trails, Chris |

OH, relax Peggy.
![]() On 3 lanes trucks are always riding the center lane. I pass like that when my exit is next all the time. ![]()

And it's not just motorcyclists that have to watch out for it.
A couple years ago heading home to Oxford, MS I watched a car in the left lane hit a tire retread in the middle of the road that they couldn't avoid. They wound up chucking it up over the hood and I watched it hit the couple in the convertible car behind them. Thankfully a whole boatload of people stopped to check on them. It scared the crap out of me and I wasn't even the one who hit it. Most times truckers that I see/talk to will try to hit the left and right lane bumps (the ones to wake you up if you run off the road) to de-tread their tires on purpose. But they've never done it that I've seen when someone is behind them. I typically see it later at night. Don't know if it's legal or not, but it happens. |

A few years ago I was passing a low boy in the cage when he lost a tire that shattered the wide load sign. Even in the cage it sounded like a bomb and scared the doodie out of me.
