How long will it run before dying? Maybe a bad petcock if a short period of time, or a bad fuel tank vent if it runs for a while before dying.

Oh sorry forgot to post that it had leaking petcock, which I rebuilt.
I know for sure it has good fuel flow at the carbs

Have you taken apart the engine (or had a mechanic do it), the inside could have a part rusted or damaged from a previous rider

nope not yet.
I am a certified Auto Tech , I do all my own cycle work as well , i can figure out most things. Of course for my bikes i have a manual , which he does not have .
Going to check compression next and put in a new set of plugs.

Check air box for squirrel's nests. Check valves for proper clearance. Don't drop knock pins down cam chain tunnel.

You are welcome. EX500 is a great bike IMHO.

Wow, good deal. New plugs might help a lot. Sometimes cleaning fouled plugs does not work.

Hey guys, sorry to disturb this sleeping forum, but I have a 2001 Ninja EX500R that seems to have a similar problem to what Dave had. My bike with about 8.5k miles on it, died on me about two weeks ago. I road it fine one day, and the next I started it up, seemed a little sluggish while running ( but it was a pretty cold day ), and then I came to a stop sign and it stalled. To give you a good image it sounded and felt like it had run out of gas, but I had a full tank of gas. So I walked it about a block home, and have been troubleshooting it since. Checked and replaced battery, sparkplugs, and just checked petcock, air filter and fuel line. I am getting spark, and have no apparent obstructions to fuel flow.

help?
