I have a Sporster 883 and there is some black gunk coming out of the gasket around one of the rocker covers. I was wondering how big of an ordeal it is to replace the gaskets. Parts are $57 from HD and they want $300 to do the job just in labor.

Do it yourself; you should have a manual anyway...feel fortunate; 57 bucks won't buy nuttin' for a Jap bike.
Of course, they don't usually just start "needing" something either. ![]() What's with all the guys here complaining about dealer labor rates? I've had bikes since '78 and I have NEVER had to take one to a dealer. Ever. Man up. Get a wrench! How hard can it be? |

It's an easy job. The manual will give you the proper torque sequence and values. If you don't have a manual I can dig it up for you.
You may have to remove the gas tank to get to the covers easily, but that's no big deal. |

No, they don't JUST START needing something, in my experience...usually you can see it coming before it fails/becomes impractical to live with.
Usually. |

I'd agree with "sometimes."
Unless it's raining and you're 1000 miles from home, in which case it's "Never." |
