With the Indy 500 coming up this weekend, I did some Googling about the engines they use in these cars. Back in 2003, BMW developed their P83 engine. Although I think it was used only in formula one racing, it's still one amazing engine. The specs are almost unbelievable! Bear in mind, this is an engine that has already been "retired."
It is a 183 cubic inch, turbocharged V-10 with four valves per cylinder. It will produce 920 HP at 19,200 RPMs! ....and it weighs less than 180 lbs! Here's some more specs on this powerhouse: ** 320 revolutions per second at peak RPM. ** 4,000rpm idle speed. ** 1,995 cubic meters of air ingested in one hour of running time. ** Max piston speed: 90mph ** Piston acceleration: 0-62 in .001sec ** Peak exhaust temperature: 1750*F

Why did they retire it? Kept coming apart or just never was in a wining car?

I wonder what fuel she runs? Straight alky, or a really high test (read EXTREMELY high octane rating).
How many psi boost? (I would imagine it is running a turbo. Pneumatic valvetrain?
