The 21st annual Ride to Work Day is taking place on Monday, June 18. The yearly event demonstrates many aspects of motorcycling to the public.
More than just being a fun event, the Ride to Work Day serves the purpose of showing the general public as well as politicians just how many motorcyclists there actually are. The day shows that there are motorcyclists in all occupations and walks of life. It also demonstrates that riders can reduce traffic and parking congestion in metropolitan areas. The yearly event is estimated to nearly triple the number of motorcycles and scooters on the road. The positive value of riding can be shown as conversations between riders and the public, as well as those they work with, can be brought up easily. The fuel savings and simple fun of riding can also be discussed with others. The first Ride to Work Day event was held in 1992. For several years, it remained an informal event promoted by advocates such as Road Rider Magazine, Dunlop Tires, and Aerostich. In 2000, Ride to Work became a 501 c4 non-profit group run by an all-volunteer staff. The first official Ride to Work Day kicked off on the third Monday in June, 2001. Ride to Work Day has since become an international effort. Riders in Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Israel, Mexico, Philippines, Turkey and Russia have joined US riders in the event. [Ride to Work]

I have one of the posters supporting this in my office. It is amazing the conversations that it starts. I have a client, a 87 year old lady that told me she has a Goldwing trike, and still rides it. She said she and her husband used to ride, and when he died about 10 years ago she got a trike and kept rolling. She said she was going to bring it to my office when the weather gets better. I told her if she did, I was taking that afternoon off and we would have to go out riding together. She thought that sounded like fun, so I expect to see her one of these days rolling up to the office.
