Default Spark plug threads stripped out

I am trying to get an old xl200r back to running. I was told exactly this

It all of the sudden started taking tons (30-50) kicks to start.
When it did start, I had to rev the motor to keep it running.
I dont know whats wrong so I drained the tank, the carb and pulled the battery.
Can you fix it for me, please?

So, I figured I would go through the basics and found out that the top 5-6 threads on the spark plug hole are just plain junked. They are so bad that the plug will only thread in 4-6 threads. I dont know how to attach a pic.

I couldnt get pics of the trashed threads in the hole, my camera isnt wanting to focus on it...

Question:
Is it worth trying to force new threads, with a "thread chaser" or should I spring for the heli-coil?

I cant seem to find an M12x1.25 helicoil kit anywhere local, and online its about $90!

If you know how to do mechanical work then pull the head and take it to a machine shop and they will do heli-coil for you. Some mechanics can tap a plug hole on the bike by pressurizing the case. I would never try this by myself.
