The spark when turning the key on is likely from the power inrush at the coil. If you have points, make sure they open and close as the engine it turned, and that the voltage at the wire connected to them goes from battery voltage to 0, open - closed. If it is electronic ignition, connect a meter to the side of the coil which goes to the igniter, and you should see the same voltage changes.

Electronic ignition, then? Turning the key must cause it to pulse the coil, then. Do you have a voltmeter? It will go much easier with one. If you do, clip one lead from the meter to the coil, and the other to the ground or engine case. When you turn the key on, you should see battery voltage. The coil has two terminals, and with the engine stopped, both should have the same voltage. When you kick it over, one should remain steady at battery voltage, but the other should be pulsed to about 0 volts, briefly, making the reading on the meter drop slightly; this is the signal which causes the spark. If both coil terminals remain steady, or one is near 0 volts and stays there, the igniter is bad.

doesn't seem like i have any volts on either of those terminals..i do have over 12 votls at the battery but on those terminals nothing..i do get a reading of 3.5 ohms on the terminal at the coil lol ..this is with key off or on

Do any lights come on with the key switch? Run/stop switch in the Run position? Fuses OK?

thanks for helping to trouble shoot this..yes lights come on with key on ..nothing happens with key on and turning run switch off..i only see 1 fuse and it is on the hot wire back at the battery...i think the 2 wires that come off the coil go into a black box..if i unhook the connection to this box i get no spark at all when i turn the key on..i have no idea what this black box is..lol..but it has the 2 wires from the coil ( i believe ) plus a green wire in 1 connection going into it then another connection with a single orange wire going into it..i really thing it's something goofy stopping the spark from going when i hit the start button..lol..i only see the 1 fuse as well unless one is hiding..when i get the manual for this it would make it a little easier..thnaks again..black box is the cdi

I would expect the orange wire is power to operate the black box (igniter); the green wire would likely be ground, unless the box is grounded through whatever attaches it to the bike. But, if the green wire is ground, how does it know when to spark? I would expect some signal from the engine to trigger the spark. I hope that manual has a wiring diagram.

i don't know lol just pulled the kill switch and it seems fine..i can see the metal ingage so don't think it is it..only thing i can think of is it has to do with the clutch possibly..but have tried holding clutch in and still no luck..maybe another fuse hiding but if there is i can't find it..thanks again
