Default Ideas to make the forum better.

I have a front page idea.
What about posting a radom pic from the members uploaded bike pics each time you log on or at least the last updated pic.

These might peak intrust in becoming a member, some of the pics are quite nice.

how bout a high res back ground area for downloading pics and posting pics just for computer backgrounds no low res allowed and only pics sutable for backgrounds.

just some ideas.......

Good ideas. I will pass them along to our team. We were already working on the frontpage random image gallery so that should be live next week.

I think the 14 posts before one can put up a link or pic is a bit excessive. It is hard to contribute to some discussions with this limitation.
Just my 2 cents.

Send a link to the picture to a moderator via PM and we will be glad to add it to a post for you.

The picture rule is in place to cut down on porn getting posted, like said above, pm a mod if it is that important and it will be posted in a timely manner

There are thousands upon thousands of posts here that you can participate in! It's not really that hard to post 15 good posts!

I understand the spam protection. I'll send a PM for a link I wish to share.
Thanks.

It was not possible to implement because there is no specially defined gallery on this forum. We would have to rip pictures from threads and we risk getting pictures that are from the tutorials or third-party copyrighted materials.

a vb site i (used to) admin (still runs but my involvement is now minimal) was littered with spam members until we started using the capcha box for new reg's.
i got sick of links constantly posted, 25-100 a day for pics of shaved britney and cheap viagra etc
you can ban certain email domains from registering - namely anything .ru for example!
there are lists of banned domains updated regularly on vb website and the ban scripts are easy to add.

we set it so members had to be personally approved by admin or super mods, usually by googling the username before approving.
most spammers are already listed as they hit 1000's of sites at once.
the number of genuine new members each day is easily manageable.

we had similar issues with new members desparately wanting to post images for diagnosis so we set the no links/images limit to 3 posts by setting them as a 'probate' user group.

most spam posters are bots and will only try to auto register once.
actual spammers will not spend the time making 3 posts, especially if they know there are vigillant mods around.
3 posts is plenty of time for a mod to spot the pattern of a spammer - and if they are not sure, a quick google of the user name and registered ip or email usually points to a reported user.

not saying how you should run your site, as you are doing a great job keeping it spam free atm - just saying what we did. lots of ways around this if you check out the vb site.

(wont link to my old site as it's illegal in most us states! )

*just for an example, check out the newest member - (wont name in case theyre gen!)
they've registered on 30+ sites this morning, all vbulletin sites, regd here and left without posting.
who takes the time to register to a forum, then doesnt leave a post?
i will show my arse if that isnt a spam bot.
another dead giveaway is if a username is also regd on warez sites.
they will never post here because they cant post links, however some will try to disguise links in seemingly innocent posts - 'hi, i'm new, nice forum you have here'

i notice the site has over 56,000 members?
i bet if you removed all banned domains it would be more like 5-10,000 genuine members.

i have reached my image upload quota, which means to add further images to posts, i would have to delete a pic from an earlier post.
this seems a shame as people often browse older threads, only to find images replaced by X

how about allowing users to subscribe to the forums, allowing you to increase your space, and allowing users to upload a higher quota of images and other files.
i would be prepared to pay for this privilege for the benefit of the forum and other users.

seeing as most images are for info purposes and in context with a thread, having to remove them deducts from the thread, especially if we have to remove thechnical info & diagrams etc.

a new 'subscriber' user group could be created, and those who wish to increase their quotas would be added to that user group. in vb it is easy for admin to assign new user groups and set custom upload limits etc.

just a thought.

one way to combat this is to use an Image Hosting site like www.tinypic.com or www.photobucket.com, (both are free, I prefer and use Photobucket) with photobucket you just copy and paste the IMG url (shown below each picture) and as long as you leave the picture there, it will always remain on the site
