Greetings:
I recently got pulled over and given a ticket in NYC for not wearing the "proper eyewear" while riding my motorcycle. I was wearing my Oakley "A Wire" sunglasses which I've been wearing for the past 2 years. I was wearing my DOT approved half-helmet (no face shield). When I told the cop I had never heard of that he told me that I either need to wear goggles or have a face shield on my helmet. Does anyone know what the exact law is for eyewear in NYC? Can I fight this or should I just pay the $30? The thing is I don't want a face shield and I'm not fond of goggles. I recently bought a pair of Oakley "Flak Jacket" sunglasses which are great when I ride. Am I going to have to be afraid I'm going to get a ticket everytime I see a cop now? If any here know the actual law, I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks. Eric |

Says needs to be approved by the commissioner, whatever that means. I wear a $5 pair of glasses I got on the sidewalk in NYC too. |

Thanks. Oh, and just to update you, the damn ticket was actually $80! You need a freakin' PHD to figure out these NYC tickets.

NYC is tough, and you'll have a HARD time winning. Ask anyone. As far as the glasses, they have to be DOT approved. Just do what everyone else does; have the goggles on top of your helmet, and when he pulls you over, pull 'em down. Good luck! ![]() |
