I did a trip years ago, that toured about 5 or 6 civil war battle fields from Va up to PA to include Gettysburg. The tour guide we had was better than the guys at the spots and really made it enjoyable for a 14 year old kid.

Also got to see the Changing of the Gaurds at the Tomb of the Unkown in Arlington.

I would love to do a trip like that again now that I know more of the history.

For me one of the most poignant Civil War sights is Fredericksburg Virginia. In Decmeber of, I think, 1862 the Union army tried to charge up a pretty steep hill called Marye's Heights.

First they had to cross a river and make their way through the town, all under fire. Then they had to charge across some open fields before they even got to the hill. The Confederates were on the hill with artillery firing down on the Union troops, and in addition they had infantry at the base of the hill behind a stone wall which provided excellent cover. The Union troops were slaughtered and only a few of them lived to start the climb up Marye's Heights, which they were quickly driven off of.

The cemetary where many of the Union dead are buried is atop Marye's Heights, so I guess those poor boys finaly did make it up the hill.

That's true. So much more can sometimes be understood then just reading it in a book alone.

Come to think of it, I'm going to be riding up to Winchester Virginia in a couple of weeks and coming back part way along Skyline Drive. I think maybe I'll go back over to Fredericksburg on the way up since I haven't been there in several years.
