So I know it varies to where you live, but how would I go about calculating the OTD price of the 2008 250R? Local Kawasaki dealership doesn't seem to know.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

How the hell could they not know or be able to figure out? That's THEIR job! Find another dealer to work you up an out the door quote because they sound like they have their heads up their asses.

Anyway, you figure in the cost of the bike, tax (PA it's 6%), documentation fees (tags, title and so on), some places charge a set up fee and even freight (from the factory to them then they charge you which some dealers will drop that). Then you calculate how much your going to put down or trade in. Always ask what the OTD price is before saying how much you want to put down.

Appears that particular Kawasaki dealer is playing games with you in order for you come in and sit down with a salesperson. They don't want to give you an guesstimate, they want you to sit down and fill out all the paperwork with all your personal information and financial background and what kind of finance rate they can get you. By the time you do all this, you practically have committed enough of your time to buy the bike from them.

I have experience this with a Harley dealer and a few car dealers. You just aren't able to ask a simple question without the salesguy saying, "Let's sit down at my desk and let's get your info."

Yeah you're right. I've never bought a bike new, first bike actually, but I'm sure car salesmen and bike salesmen are of the same breed so-to-speak. So I was thinking I'd try to get a deal on a Good Times protection plan and score a free solo seat cover, but pay full MSRP. I think that's pushing it, maybe I'll pick up some tips on how to charm the salesman. His tie looks good on him, tell him his hands are amazingly soft. :D

And by the way, any salesman who tells you "I really don't know..." is full of ****! I would NOT do business with a guy like that. Also too, make a bunch of phone calls. Phone around and ask for the BEST OTD price. I played three different dealerships against each other to get my sale. Especially now, dealerships are hard pressed to make a sale. It's cold as all get out and the weather is crappy, and sales are down. A salesman who tells you "i don't know" when it comes to pricing is full of it. This is my soapbox for the day LOL.

I am quite hard to get along with about car/pk/mc dealers. The only reason I buy from a dealer is having gone through the, "Dude, my brother-in-law has the title..." that doesn't happen at dealers. But I hate being lied to. I am going to give a dealer money, my money. This is starting what I want to be a good business association. I want to know I am going to someone I can trust and send my friends to. At the first point of deception I'll call his hand. If it happens again, I walk. I know they are in the business to make money and have people working for them with families. I would hope they would be more interested in gaining customers than just making money off a one time purchase. I just want a fair deal. If someone lies, it is not a fair deal.

I'm with gumbie on that. I had a dealer send a big breasted blonde with a low cut dress on to talk me into the sale, and it really insulted me. I told the woman that with a face like that, the large breasts didn't do anything, and walked out the door. I'm happy to say, however, that the Harley dealer who also sells Suzukis in our area was very nice and didn't pull any punches with me. Even tho I bought a Suzuki rather than a Harley, I've had only one problem with them for maintenance, and that was because they lost a mechanic at a lousy time during the season. They ended up giving me the part free for my inconvenience. It's too bad most dealers don't understand that in order to sell, all they have to do is treat their customers fairly.

Dealers around here will provide the OTD price over the phone. I've gotten these figures on more than one occasion.

If there is more than one dealer in your area selling the make/model you're interested in, don't give up. Really, you only need the OTD from ONE dealer, then you can start working your way down from that price....even during negotiations with the dealer(s) that DIDN'T give you the OTD by phone.

Of course, me personally, I don't know that I'd buy from a dealer telling me they didn't know the OTD. They'd lose all credibility in my eyes. I'd prefer they tell me, "I'm sorry, but our policy is to not provide that info over the phone. Can you come in to our store and I'd be more than happy to help with the figures you need". Now THAT would at least show some integrity and professionalism without going against their dealers policy.
