2002 Honda CBR f4i - what is it worth?

I just went up to Raleigh today to look at a CBR I am thinking about buying. It is a 2002 Honda CBR F4i. Perfect condition. Not a single ding on it anywhere. Sounds great however I did not ride it. I did turn it on and listen to it and let it warm up. I plan on riding it if I can figure out if this is a good deal or not. All stock except for a fender eliminator.

It has ~10k miles and brand new tires on the front and back (they still have the little nipples on the tire from factory). Guy is selling it because his wife is pregnant with their second kid.

He is asking $3700. I talked him down from $4k. Kinda steep on what I am willing to pay, but like I said, it looks like it can be on the showroom floor.

Here is a picture:

The other bike I looked at was a 1999 Honda CBR F4. It was in poor-fair condition at best. Scratches, been dropped on both sides... just overall used. He only wants $2500 for it though. It has 19k miles and needs tires all around. Not sure what to do here. They are both on complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

Any of these a decent deal?

+1 on Dodsfall.

Check out kbb.com to get an idea. kbb tends to be low and sellers hate that but it gives an idea.

On the other hand, you have to add or subtract on the price based on condition, etc. New tires adds because of cost of tires plus installation and the cost of dealing with it. Bike looks really good is a plus. Check out the suspension and bounce the bike a little and check for fork seal leaks and make sure the rear shock preload adjuster works. Check the chain to see if it's good and lubed. Check the steering head for snugness and not loose.

Just because the wife is pregnant (I'd check that too ;-)), I'm happy to pay a small premium just to help out (but I won't tell him that until after the deal).

Ensure all fasteners are present on the fairings. Look at the brake pads (bring a flashlight) and see how worn; check the condition of the brake fluid and perhaps the oil and coolant as you may need to change them. Ensure the controls and sweet are crisp (e.g., throttle snaps back if you let go, check for freeplay that might be so much you can no longer adjust for it (which could mean the need for new cables)).

Don't be too in a hurry, economy is bad and worse than the govt. ***s are willing to say.

Yeah his daughter was out there with us (shes in pre-school). She was cute haha (not in a weird way, in a little kid way). The guy seems pretty honest, he use to take his little girl out around the nighborhood on it. When we were out there she just climed right up and said "I wana go fast daddy" haha. It was funny.

The bike has no issues that I could see. I check the chain play, the tensioner is all the way back so it can be adjusted for a good bit. It really is in great condition, that is why I am considerign such a high price.

It seems that the only cbrs I see come up for sale around here for under 3 are always scratched and overall rough condition ( or heavily modified) plus this is one of the lower mile ones I have seen so far (excluding another 3k mile CBR that just went up for sale last night) The one with 3k miles also wants $3700.

Would any of you guys pay this for that bike? If it is pretty much everything you want? I dont want to low ball him, I already brought him down from $4k.

well the f4i is fuel injected, which I like alot (plus it has a digital speed-o)

I talked the guy down to $3600. I think I am gonna grab it. I have yet to see a CBR is such good condition. My buddy just picked one up for $2800 with 16k miles and it was laid down. I will pay a little extra for the body work and low miles I think. Plus it just had 2 new tires installed, chain always lubed... etc etc...

I'd be pulling $3600 out of the bank and walking over and handing him that money.

I paid $1600 for mine, about $500 in parts. $2100 total spent. I have yet to fix the blinkers. I need a new front tire, and mine is a 99' F4.

the other bike I Was looking at is a 99 f4. It is in pretty rough condition. Does you bike knock any? I swear it had a small knock to it. But I couldn't pinpoint it. It got up and went though, so I couldn't tell as far as if it had any performance issues. However, this thing has been laid down on both side, broke the brake lever... etc etc...

Mine doesn't have any type of motor problems (Knocks on wood)

My first gear does have a weird sound to it if you down shift into 1st while going over 30. It almost sounds as if the gear is struggling (But it doesn't jerk, slip/etc.) (ONLY when you DOWN SHIFT into the gear.) so I only start to down shift to first when I am going 25 MPH or below.

I believe the F4 had cam chain tensioner issue as well. I'm very partial to fuel injection so I'd go for the F4i.

Btw I've an OEM shield for 99 f4 and that center fairing if u need it. I traded mine some time ago and forgot to reinstall that center fairing piece. I kept it off to simplify oil changes.

Btw, I got a great deal on tires over winter and it was $200 shipped for front and rear tire. Install was close to $100 so that's close to $300 value for new tires.

The center fairing piece was from my old black/yellow 1999 F4. I was thinking maybe DevRev might want it. I'm hoping you don't need it as that black/red F4i looks pretty well setup.

Anyway, due to new tires, the $3700 translates to $3500.

To me, a bike that's pretty clean translates to at least a $100 value -- I would spend days cleaning it if it looked like ****; this would mean cleaning materials, elbow grease and time.

This makes your "normalized" price at around $3400.

Kelly bluebook for motorcycles shows "Excellent Retail" price for 2002 F4i at $2990. That's the best that any seller should hope to get -- unless there's something special. Maybe NADA says more -- don't know but still, that's a good seller's price.

You're at $3600. Say new tires adds $200-300ish gets you to close to a $3300 "normalized" price. Maybe the fact that it looks good, gets you to $3200.

So you're only $200 off high retail.

I hate to say it but it's still easily $200 higher than the highest (or at least on the high end of the spectrum) price you *should* pay.

However, you still have to consider...
it's Summer (good time to sell)
what other choices exist?
maybe you just love red. For me, it's dark blue
I'd give $100 premium just to "help out" -- but that's just me.
maybe he can throw in some gear? I got a Joe Rocket jacket and tank bag (both still in use today) when I bought my F4
I'm sure there are other intangibles that you can use to justify the higher price tag

Just my "disinterested" opinion. If I were in your shoes, it could be different -- the thought of getting a new bike makes me a little weak .

I bought my F4 (traded away long ago) Dec 24th; they delivered it on the first snowfall. The young couple seemed to need the money and a deal fell through when they sold it the first time. The bike looked uncared for -- I spent a week or two fixing it up and had to wait a few weeks to ride it in the cold Winter; it was months before I could enjoy it on warm days. -- so my case was different.

Honda makes a great street bike. My last bike was a 99 CBR 900rr and when I sold her she had over 45,000 k miles and was still a peppy girl. It would chew up and spit out those 600 cc little rockets all day long. The best thing about this carburator Honda was, she never once broke down. She did leave me stranded 2 miles from home once back in 2005 when I snapped a chain, but that was my fault for changing the sprockets but not the chain.

I still see her out and about sometimes, but the AZZHOLE kid dented the tank in, took some fairings off and made it into a stunt bike. I want to ring his neck for that. I had that bike since she was new on the showroom floor so you see my anger about what he did.

Good luck to you on your CBR purchase  I'm to old to be comfortable on a rocket now, but I sure got alot of chics (I think you call them hoes now adays) back then. AHHHH The good old days before marriage !!! :coffeescreen:

well its also has a $200 seat on it as well. I think I am going to pay the $3600. I know what KBB says, but honestly, that just isn't what they are going for in my area. 2900 gets you a high mileage, scratched f4i. You show me a better deal and ill grab it! haha

(p.s. I REALLY like the red. I want something somebody is going to see on the road easily)

well guys Im happy to say I talked to the guy and hes gonna hold it for me until I can come get it. He said since I show so much interest he will postpone the other guy till next weekend... which means that I am buying my bike in less then 5 days :)

yeah, all stock. The only thing he has done is integrated the rear turn signals into the tail-lights and eliminated the fender. I was worried about it at first but the LED's in the rear are very bright and I like how it flashes bright amber to turn (I want people to know exactly what I am doing)

I cannot wait. I am ready to make this thing my own.
