Seriously, how do I crank my bike

Traded a 3rd car that I didn't need with a bike that my friend owned. A 2005 Yamaha r1, with 300mm rear tire, and many extras. I still don't know anything about them. I am just curious about them and might ride it or learn to ride it just for the hell of it. Always wanted too. Had it checked before we traded and it turned out pretty good, no issues. Now, how do I crank it lol. I just have it sitting in my garage until my friend comes back from out of town. I know it is manual. But, when I do put the key in, turn it, hold the left side clutch I guess and press the button? If it was in gear, will it still crank? Also, how do I put it in neutral? and how to turn it off after I crank it up. Really guys, not joking lol.

If this is for real, I'd sell it and get something to actually ride. With a 300mm tire, it would be better to roll lawns than ride on the road. Of course the 150 hp (or whatever) engine would be better to till gardens.

If this is a remotely serious post, take some sage advice - sell the drag bike replica and get a decent rider.

Well maybe a little bit but rather than when it is too late. Damn we shoulda told the new owner not to take it out.
In all honesty I don't think it is your typical first bike. Not that you have to be typical... In any case Welcome to the Forum.

Thanks for some of the helpful comments. I am not going to ride it people, relax. Just one of those deals where I got rid of a car and got a bike. Will sell it for sure. Just curious on how to crank it at least. I am not stupid to go ride it. I am scared to even start it lol.

No change. I might do. Even if I destroy it , it is still my bike. But it is hard to get just an opinion in this forum without having someone being a crack wise. Sure, you guys might be experts, but I thought I would be getting some serious answers, but seems like some of the answers are childish. I should have known better. And to the last answer, yes I did say that, but you might want to re-read it. I said MIGHT, that word means, maybe, possible, depends,.....etc.

Yes as quoted, might. Anyway yes it's yours to do as you choose only thing I ask is when and if you destroy it please do it so no others are involved. Enjoy!
I think you got the opinions it's the facts or how to's that were a little slow in coming but you were not in any rush, right?
Oh and I am not an expert, as many of us felt you might not be also.

Eh, don't take the sarcasm too personally. It's that time of year, meaning, motorcycling forums get bombarded with a lot of posts/threads that go something like this:

"Hi! I'm a new rider and I heard the Kawasaki ZX-14 and Suzuki Hayabusa are great bikes! Which one would you pick?"

"Welcome to the forum! Those are nice bikes, but they aren't for a newbie. *insert long explanation why*"

"LOL! I'm not a stupid squid! I'm a mature 18 year old that drives a Saleen Mustang so I know how to respect power! I won't go too fast on the bike, besides my stunter buddies are going to watch over me and show me the ropes!"

Then things go down hill from there. A repeated and tiresome debate happens, so on and so forth. So don't be surprised that when you come in and say "I have no bike experience and just got my hands on an R1, how do I start it?"... Folks may be quick to jump on the "aw, ****... not THIS again" train.

That out of the way, to help with the neutral issue... The bike has a light that will come on that indicates you've found neutral. Because of the 1/2 click thing it can be tricky to find if you don't know what you're doing. Sometimes it can help to rock the bike back and forth a bit to make it easier to click into "N".

Other than that, starting the thing is as simple as turning the key, making sure the kill switch is in the "run" position, then pushing the starter button. Note: Not all bikes require you to pull in the clutch to start them if they are in neutral. If in gear, they won't start unless the kick stand is up and the clutch is pulled in.

talool

put the keys into the bike
turn them ON

a light (indicator) should come on showing the transmission is in neutral
if not, pull in the clutch (left hand) and move the shift lever (left foot) up or down until the light is ON

turn the engine emergency switch (KILL switch) on right handlebar to ON

crank the starter button on the right handlebar (below the kill switch)
the engine should start and bike GOES.

The first bike i ever rode was some P.O.S. chinese junk, then the second bike i rode was my little brothers 09 R1, let me tell you it scared the living hell out of me. Im not sure what riding style you will like better cruising or sport but i would sell that bike and get a 600cc bike whether it be cruiser or sport, and then enjoy the ride.
