Knee Down!!!!!

June 14, 2009 by rexmitchell

So I got my knee down today on Lime Creek road!!!!!!!!! Woooohooooo! I am so excited, but man that was scary! I had already gone through this corner and scraped my peg pretty bad so I adjusted my body position, and next thing I knew I heard that wonderful sound. I figured out I was doing some things wrong going into turns, I was going in too slow and turning too early, I went in faster today turned later and got lower, man what a rush it was to drag my knee! I went back and tried it again but I was too scared to do it again. I’ll be back out thursday though and I’m suppose to have someone taking hi res picks of me! Anyway here is what the puck and toe slider looked like after.

Congrats Rex, for regular knee draging do you have to wear a diff gear ? or is there some kind of hard protection on the knee ?

The first pic is of my knee puck, it is the hard plastic part that makes contact with the ground, additionally behind it in my suit is some pretty stiff knee protection.

But will the hard plastic not wear out due to frequent knee dragging ? my question was do we get special gear just for knee draging ? the one which track racers use ? or is it the normal gear.

I believe those are removable/replaceable, some come with the gear, some you can purchase

Rex, are we going to see another Raffaele de Rosa soon?

BTW can't see pics at work, musta used photobucket?

Sorry I misunderstood you, yes it will wear out, with any track gear the sliders come with it, they velcro on and are made to be replaced, I wear a 1 piece suit that was specifically designed for track use. I only wear this in the twisties

LOL, I went out really early, no one out yet, I only saw 2 cars and the turn I was working on, if I wipe out I will be in a ditch with nothing but open field behind it.

That takes more kahunas than what I got. I have a long way before I even get the pegs to touch the ground let alone my knee.

I remember when I first got my knee down on my RS 125 it scratched up my knee pretty bad cause I was wearing jeans but it was so worth it and it's the best feeling in the world knowing you finally built up the skill to do it.

You'll get to a point where you'll want to drag everywhere and destroy pucks--it's sort of like puberty, where you'll want to hump everything with a hole and a heartbeat, haha.

But then you realize that dragging knee doesn't necessarily mean you're fast--plenty of guys who concentrate on destroying pucks and think that it's everything, but you can be fast w/ virgin pucks.

I remember once I got my knee down, I was obsessed with it, but these days my pucks last a lot longer.

Also, what's really fun is when you get your knee down, and have to increase your lean more and sucking your knee into the frame until you're at max lean. OR, dragging elbow

The elbow is next, honestly I wasn't really trying to put my knee down, it just happened. I was just working on my form and speed coming out of the corners and bam it happened.

so how'd it feel? Other than being "scary". Was it shaky, was it steady? what it brief? did it bump your body up? did it alter your steering? etc etc.

I dragged shoe-sole before
it wasn't the nicest thing in the world. I almost high-sided, it scared me so much! Once my fore-foot touched down, i freaked and released throttle. Experience from driving told me not to grab the brakes, which probably would have definitely caused a high-side.

It was "easier" for me to drag fore-foot/shoe sole since my pegs are a bit lower and forward due to the standard bike setup of the SV.

Anyway, I just got my 2pc suit, and some nice new knee pucks. So, maybe in about 2years, I'll have my first knee down

Sidenote/digression:
Why are they called knee-pucks when they don't even sit at the knee? Mine are at the side of my leg just under the knee. Hopefully, it's supposed to be like that. :S

I have dragged my shoe a couple times, I actually dragged my toe before I got my knee down, my foot was too far up on the peg and I needed to be on the ball of my feet. It was definitely scary and a little startling, I didn't put weight on my knee, It just touched and scraped for a second, nothing spectacular. I heard it before I felt it, but man what a wonderful sound.

"the thing that protects the side of your leg just under the knee" puck ... that's what I'd call it

Maybe leg sliders? race sliders? race pucks?

Went out and hit it hard again, put my knee down maybe 4 or 5 times, had a buddy of mine who is a pro photographer out there shooting some still shots of me, got some good pics, I am pretty sure he got one with my knee down. The pics require some software that is only on his computer at home so I won't have the pics till next week, I will update my knee puck pic in a sec though.

darn it Rex - either you suck at taking close-up pictures or you need another camera, or don't use your cellphone to take pictures. My 6 year old 3.1M digital camera can take better pictures than that!
