Just joined the forum. I have been using it for some time to get information about various things, mostly maintenance and specifications of older Honda bikes. Being in my mid fifties makes me an older biker. I have been riding bikes since I was 16. Living in Thailand and coming from Denmark, I have the same interest for motorcycles as I have always had. I have a Honda VT 45 750 cc Super Magna, 1988 model. This bike has needed some maintenance, last year I gave it a new coat of paint and this year I have had parts of it chromed, such as the exhaust pipes and various smaller items. Getting spare parts for this bike is not difficult in general, despite its age. I am looking forward to participating in this forum in the future.

Hey Everyone.

Ever think when you are riding on the roadways 'there are just too many darn car drivers out here'? Its a bit of an uneasy feeling right? I was thinking the other day about what it would be like if I could know which of the car drivers around me were in fact also motorcycle riders. Cuz you know we make better drivers! Then it hit me. What if there were a universal method, a simple sticker, by which to identify fellow riders in their vehicles?

We may NEVER change non-riders into 'motorcycle aware drivers' BUT if we become 'rider aware riders' we can know who our friends are on the road. This would serve multiple purposes. For the rider we can SEE who the 'rider aware' drivers are and, in conjunction with driver acknowledgement, know we have a teammate on the road to enhance our safety. Ever hold off from taking a left turn across a motorcyclists path because you wanted to protect them from the cagers behind you? Well what were you? A cager also as far as the rider was concerned. Not if you have the sticker in front of your car. That is the other purpose of the sticker. It allows us to maintain the bond we share as riders even when we leave that world and enter our cars.

I don't want to get too long winded here. I just wanted your input and opinions. This is the abbreviated version. You can learn more by looking into Bikers Bond. BTW I am not suggesting to ever let your guard down, I just believe that we can enhance the already fantastic relationship we all share as riders.

Please share your opinions.

I've thought about practicing riding at night or maybe going really early - but I have second thoughts. My brother won't even ride at night - statistically more accidents occur. I think though it would be a good idea to know how to ride at night in the dark with lights at some point, though - what if you get caught out for any reason and have to ride home ?
Any opinions ?

To get some extra credit for my Composition II class, we had to write a sonnet. I personally don't like sonnets, but hey, anything to keep that GPA up. (A sonnet has the rhyme scheme of ABAB ABAB ABAB AA.)
I read the sonnets posted by other students, and they were all about love 'n ****. Well, they say to write about what you know, so here it is. The teacher loved it, but I don't think it thrilled the housewives that were posting about marriages and divorces.

Anyway, I present to you:

The Bar

I visit the bar, often full of friends,
And where strangers often meet.
Where many a beer of mine has met its end,
Whether it honey, dark, or wheat.

I stay in the back, where pool is played,
Where I am not too often beat.
Many a player is ultimately dismayed
At my skills, and their defeat.

The drinks go fast, the night is long
And I’m laughing most the while.
I tell jokes that are horribly wrong
And usually get a smile.

At the bar, I’m the king of the hill!
The only downside – paying the bill.

So about a year ago, my bike got tipped over onto it's right side, and ever since then, squeezing the front brake handle no longer illuminates the rear brake light. The rear brake pedal, however, does.

-I checked the front brake switch with a multimeter, activating it still completes the circuit.

-There is power coming from the positive wire to the switch, but if you remove the switch and touch the two wires leading to the switch together, there is still no illumination.

-That leads me to believe there is a bad ground somewhere in the system. I traced the wiring all the way down to the headlight where it then connects to the rest of the wiring harness and none of the wiring looks chewed up.

I cant imagine that the bike falling over would damage the wiring harness throughout the body/frame. Any thoughts?

I wanted to share some experiences that I have had lately that might help some of my fellow riders.
There is obviously a ton of talk in the motorcycle community about brand new riders. Most of the advice that they receive is from very experienced riders that have SO much to offer us noobs. I feel like there is a middle group that I belong to right now that could also use some advice. Being there right now gives me a clear understanding of the challenges faced by us novice/intermediate riders.
As a beginning rider I had so much fun in the MSF course. I wasn't sure how the class would be, but I ended up having so much fun learning the techniques that they showed me. It was really great to learn things that I wouldn't want to try on my own: panic stops, swerves, keeping your head up.
Once you leave the class it is really intense to get on the road for the first time. It's like you have all the ingredients to make your favorite dish, but they haven't had enough time to cook in your brain. The road is a scary yet exciting place. You are cautious, but you are having so much fun at the same time. The scary part is when you start letting your guard down. You start to feel comfortable and realize you haven't practiced, for example, a panic stop since your class. You are really starting to have so much fun that you are just riding around and enjoying your time. I feel like it is always important to enjoy the ride, but I have to remind myself to still practice these skills. 'Keep your head up, look through that turn!' In some ways being a complete beginner is safer than the intermediate stage where you feel comfortable. You can't get too complacent with your skills. You have to keep perfecting your skill.
I used the word 'you' a lot in this. By you, I mean anyone, including myself. Have fun out there, but remember to not get over confident when you have 300 miles under your belt.

Honda is rolling out three variations of it's CB500 series this year. The CB500F is a naked standard and the CB500X is an adventure bike. The CBR500R is a sport model that will be released this summer.

The CB500 series share the same engine, a 471 cc parallel twin. The CBR500R is meant to be a step up from the popular CBR250 and provide an alternative to Kawasaki's recently-released Ninja 300. The middleweight motorcycle is physically larger then the CBR 250, giving taller riders more leg and arm room.

The CBR500R is built in Taiwan for Honda. The US and European models will be identical to provide streamlining of manufacture. The engine produces 47 horsepower which was purposely designed to comply with the European system of tiered licensing. The 37 foot pounds of torque can be utilized through most of the fairly-flat power band.

A 6-speed transmission drives power to the rear wheel with an easy-pulling clutch. There is no included slipper clutch as can be found in the Ninja 300, possibly its main commercial rival.

Full size Dunlop tires cover the wheels and hold up the 429-pound motorcycle, compared to the skinny rubber found on most entry-level machines. The optional $500 ABS package will help with the braking through a linked system.

A big 4.1 gallon gas tank supplies a huge 290-mile range based on the claimed 71 MPG the CBR500R. That is a lot of road between drinks.

The CBR500R has a retail price of $5999, which should put it in reach of many new riders looking to start a bit bigger than the 250 market can offer. That also places it at about half the price of a 2013 CBR600RR.

Not sure if this should be here or in the 'first bike' section but I figured its a law so...
I'm looking at getting a bike in the near future and boom, communities near where I live have started passing laws targeting loud exhausts, mainly on bikes (they included cars as an afterthought and to avoid discrimination issues). Ignoring the fact the a cities bylaw shouldn't be able to supersede the provincial motor vehicle laws the law seems extreme. Using the J2825 standard it limits the noise to 92db at idle and 96bd (1,2,5 and 6 cyl at 2000rpm) or 100bd (3 and 4 cyl at 5000rpm), this seems low to me. They can do anything from force you to 'fix' the problem to confiscating you plates and forcing you off the road.

Does anyone know of a listing of factory exhaust noise levels for different bikes? If not then by chance does anyone know the levels of their own bikes? I'm concerned that some or possibly a lot of factory exhausts will be loud enough that they fail or at the very least I end up pulled over for the test on a regular basis. Last thing I need is to finally get a bike just to not be allowed to ride it.

Hello,

I just bought a little 49cc scooter for my commute to work purely for economical reasons. I had no idea how much fun it would be! I'm now shopping around and doing my research about riding safety, mechanics, etc. in preperation to buy my first motorcycle!

I plan on using it for my commute to work but also to travel from Orange County, CA to Los Angeles at least once a month, sometimes more, usually at night. I don't plan on trying that ride right off the bat, of course. I'm going to ride my local streets and take quick short jaunts on my local freeways as well as riding the multiple canyon roads by my house before I attempt my first OC to LA trip.

Which brings me to my question, what engine size would be the best (i.e. safest) for the OC to LA ride? I don't want to get a ride with more power than I can handle, but I also don't want to be lacking enough power to get out of any possible bad situations on the freeway. I know I will be getting a metric cruiser of some kind. My intitial thought was to get a 650cc. Is that enough power for freeway riding? Or should I consider something maybe a little bigger like a 750 or 800? Thanks for reading! Your sage advice is appreciated! :)

How are the Hyosung bikes in terms of reliability, build quality, and resale value? I'm looking to expand my range of starter bikes beyond a Ninja 250 but want something I could turn around and sell on Craigslist within a few months without taking much of a loss. I've heard the Ninjas are the gold standard for this, in that they can often be turned around for essentially the same as what people paid for them.

The Hyosung bikes are intriguing because the GT250R is a bit bigger, and some of them look decent for the price-- which is attractively low. There are some other 250s and a 650 that look like they might be decent starter bikes.

I'll be relying on one for daily use and don't want it to break down. Can't find much about them after some searching.

Thanks!

Being the cheap person that I am, when my lawn mower finally reached the point from which it could no longer be resuscitated, I picked up a non-running one for $25 on craigslist. New spark plug, cleaned the carbs, new gas, hit it with a bit of starter fluid, and it fired up great. The problem is in shutting it off. The cable that attaches to the kill lever is kinked, so it doesn't release very easily. No worries, I thought, I'll just yank off the spark plug wire. And the damned thing kept running! How does that happen? My best guess is that maybe the combustion chamber is hot enough to keep firing without introducing a spark? Can anyone shed some light on this mystery for me? haha

So my first bike is a 2013 Harley Night Rod Special. I personally think it was a very bad decision for my first bike. I don't feel like it's so much the power of the bike but that the damn thing cost so much I don't want to drop it. I really want to get proficient with slow maneuvers and find it challenging with such a heavy bike.

I said to the wife "baby I'm going to sell the Harley and get a more ideal starter bike"...

I got that look...you married guys know the look I'm talking about. She said "You are NOT selling my Harley!!!" I then tossed her the perplexed Scooby Doo WTF look.

She says "Just buy another bike, we are keeping the Harley" I thought, I sure did marry the right one!

So looking at a pseudo inexpensive bike that I can practice the basics on and that would also be a good commuter bike. I'm currently leaning toward the Honda CTX700 that should be in the showroom in a week or so...any thoughts?

I am on a Caribbean island and they offer Harley rental for like $120 per day, and I'd like to rent one. At the dealer a couple years back, I sat on the 250 and it was perfect, the 600 was slightly on the heavy side (Ninjas)..j I have since then gotten used to 600cc as well, although i prefer the 250.

and then just for kicks I saw on a 1100cc+ Harley and WOW that thing was monstrous and very heavy, hahaha. I havent sat on a Harley since.

Do you think I would be ok riding this harley? No one goes more than like 45mph here. I just want to cruise on a motorcycle on this island for my birthday. but im hesitating because of my size.
Appeared originally in Mysterious Ways magazine.

Casey wasn’t the most popular dog in her owner Carol Baird’s neighborhood of Dalton, Ga. A huge, burly Alaskan malamute, she had a heart of gold but a nose for trouble.

She’d slip out the Baird family’s back door and trot down the street without a care. Most people gave her a wide berth. That was hardly surprising. From a distance, Casey looked a lot like a wolf.

She behaved like one too, or at least had an appetite like one. Neighbors often stormed over to complain. “Your dog got out again, and ate all of our dog’s food!” or “Casey’s turned over our garbage!”

So when a man rapped on Carol’s door, said he lived three blocks away and then asked for her dog’s name, Carol braced herself. What did Casey do this time?

“We have a sliding-glass door that we usually keep open in the summer,” the man began, “and every day for the last several weeks your dog has wandered off the street and come uninvited into my house.”

That dog, Carol thought. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “I don’t know why Casey gets herself into such mischief. A lot of it’s our fault. We have to start watching her more closely. But honestly, she means no harm...”

“No, you don’t understand,” the man interrupted. “I came over to thank you.”

The man must have seen the confusion on Carol’s face. No neighbor had ever said anything positive about Casey before. They usually wanted to know who would fill up the two-foot hole she’d energetically dug in their backyard.

But not this neighbor. He explained that his father, who had Alzheimer’s, lived with him and his wife and needed constant monitoring. The father rarely moved from his easy chair in front of the TV in the living room and was often agitated. Caring for him had exhausted the man and his wife.

“I couldn’t remember the last time we had two hours to ourselves,” the man said. “And then, one day, your dog showed up.”

Casey wandered into the house through the sliding door and made straight for the man’s father. “She sat right beside him, like she had planned to visit him all along,” the neighbor said, his voice filled with wonder.

He saw his father turn to Casey and begin to pet her. He stroked her and stroked her, and fell peacefully asleep. “He slept two full hours,” the neighbor said. “It was the biggest midday reprieve my wife and I have had in years.”

Casey returned the next day, and every day after that, as if she had an appointment to keep. Each time was the same. She’d pad to the old man’s chair and sit by his side, letting him pet her till he dozed off.

“To my wife and me,” the neighbor said, “Casey was a gift from heaven. That’s why I’ve come to see you today. Is Casey here?”

“Yes, she is,” Carol said. “Casey!”

The big malamute trotted up, looking at the neighbor with searching eyes. The neighbor gave a gentle pat. “You must have known, didn’t you?” the neighbor said to Casey. “That’s why you just stopped coming a couple of days ago.”

“Known what?” Carol asked.

“My father died in his sleep the night after Casey’s last visit. She knew her job was over.”

...with flying colors...well, sort of. I must say that I got a lot out of this course. I have been practicing and riding prior to the course this past weekend, but discovered that I picked up a bad habit when it came to slow maneuvers. I would keep looking at the ground to make sure I was stopping at the right cone, staying in the box, etc. Learned that the habit was also sort of a "trust" issue with the bike, meaning that I felt I had to look down to make sure I wouldn't hit anything as opposed to simply looking where I wanted to go. This is only with slower-speed maneuvers, as I do look where I want to go while on the road. Of course, I know how important this is while swerving to miss road hazards. After a couple of minor corrections along the way I breezed through everything, particularly the close-quarter exercises.

I also noticed a difference in my riding when I took the bike out yesterday. My confidence seemed to double what it was compared to other rides before the course. The course reinforced my good habits and broke the bad ones. I knew the BRC would help, but not this much. Now, I'm seriously considering taking the advanced rider course later this year.

So, I would like to offer my first (and last, until I get more miles under my belt) official bit of advice to all new riders: Take the BRC as soon as you can!

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware is a small seaside community of about one mile square that has a population of 1,327 residents. One of those residents was upset enough by the required $40 scooter parking permit to file a class action lawsuit over the fee.

Lawrence Myslewski filed the suit in the US District Court of Delaware citing that the new scooter permits violate the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. Motorcycle and automobile owners do not have to obtain a permit to park in the city.

Myslewski states in his suit that he cannot even park his two Vespa scooters in front of his house without first obtaining a permit for each. Myslewski's attorney, David Finger, said the new ordinance does not treat all motorists equally.

The stated goal of the new law was to “create safe and effective scooter parking”. Myslewski's lawsuit says the law does nothing to add to the safety of the residents. Scooters are already prohibited from parking or riding on sidewalks in Rehoboth Beach.

“There is no basis to conclude that use of motor scooters results in any greater threat to public safety than any other form of motorized transportation such that different treatment is required,” the suit says.

It is unknown at this time how large the class will be or when it will be heard by the court, as the suit was just recently filed. Myslewski is asking that attorney fees be paid and that the law is declared unconstitutional.

I put this up yesterday, but it may have been on a dead thread (do you have those here?) Anyhoo, I'm hoping to find some answers pretty quickly if you wouldn't mind indulging me?

I'm an author working a book set here in Australia, and I wondered whether any of you biker boys would mind answering some questions for me?

My main character is a young guy, 6'3 in height and a fairly decent build (not overweight, but rather well muscled, if any of you have seen the TV show Supernatural then think Sam or the big guy as I like to call him) anyway I need advice on a bike big enough to fit this guy. I wanted something modern-ish I was thinking a Triumph Tiger? Only because I saw one recently and thought it might be tall enough to fit my guy.

I'm completely in the dark when it comes to bikes, so any help you could give would be very much appreciated!

Thanks everyone, hope to hear back from you soon! :)

Greetings

I've been a motorcycle rider since age 12, rode only Hondas from Mini 50 to a V45 Sabre which was my last bike that I sold in 1992 after my daughter was born. Hadn't been on two wheels till summer 2008 when I got the bug for a Vespa and purchased a GTS250 in Dragon Red. I loved the scooter, especially the storage, 65mpg, and the Sprezzatura! But the pot hole situation here in Rockland County NY has gotten out of control, recently I just missed one that had it caught my front wheel I'd be six feet under. That was when I decided I needed a full size bike again and sold the Vespa. But I guess I've mellowed with age, I'm no longer seduced by the edgy Jap super bikes and I'm not going to be a Harley guy in this lifetime. I'd been eying a used Triumph, but there's just something about that boxer. I new I wanted a twin of some sort and then spotted a potential great deal on ebay. I just won this 1996 R1100R with 17,500 miles and full documented service history for $2500. Mechanically very sound but has some cosmetic issues. I could us some advise on the following, and bear in mind that I dont have a garage to do my own mechanical work:

1. There's a dent in the front rim on the left side, not very noticeable until I hit 70mph, any recommendations on where in my area(within an hours ride) to get it fixed? I was thinking of heating the spot with a hair blower and giving it some wacks with a rubber mallet. I figure if I can get it 90% true then a good balancing can compensate. I'm trying to avoid having to buy a new rim.

2. Any recommendations for a good seat re-upholsterer?

3. Nasty dent in gas tank, best price I got so far(if I remove and ship) is $450.

4. I need better mirrors than stock...bigger and wider!

5. Handguards...for the fall cold weather...not brush and branches.

Thanks!

Recently for no reason at all I felt like working on it, so I cleared out the shed and workbench and looked on Ebay for new valves, shims, buckets and cam shafts.

Imagine my surprise when I found a complete cylinder head recently taken off a running bike - RESULT!!!!!

Hello All,

My name's Michael and I originally hail from Toronto. I moved to Asheville in North Carolina a couple of years back and am in love with the riding roads here, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful ride! So close to Deal's Gap also but I'm yet to ride out there.

I ride a classic, 1979 Suzuki GS750. My Father and I did a pretty significant restoration which included boring out the cylinders, new Wiseco pistons, carb rebuild, finding original 2, 2 into 1 exhausts and more. I even replaced the ignition points with an electric system and man, that was probably the best change I could have made.

I joined this forum so I could get some advice on minor repairs. My Pops was my main go to for advice on tweaks but we're about 1,600 km apart and I'm looking for more resources. Maybe even find some riding buddies on here, always better to travel in packs in my experience.

I look forward to reading through posts, helping where I can and getting help from others!

Safe riding, keep the shiny side up!
Which is sorta odd, considering all of the classic cars, modified or souped-up cars, and so on that ya see on the coast. Hell, we even have Cruisin' the Coast yearly, which is a huge event that brings in people from all over the country.

Anyway, that got me wondering, because while my bike isn't amazingly loud, it's definitely loud enough to drown out some high-end stereo systems blasting rap at red lights.

So - anyone ever been stopped or ticketed for having loud pipes?

I got a to watch a car in lorry's no-zone get run into by the back of the trailer and he went off the road and flew over a small hill in the median and on to the other side of the interstate while driving my car home from work. I tried to find the lorry that hit the car and never stopped, but I-81 is packed full of lorrys and I was unable to get the plate number. Just a reminder for my fellow new riders, if that cage could get demolished like that, imagine what the no-zone can and will do to you. I'll not soon forget that when I'm out on my bike, this was a lesson someone else had to learn, I was just there to see it. I hope those people in that car are alright. Also, even in a car, other cars when something distracts them like that can and will run into you if you don't pay attention. I almost had a car run into the front drivers side of my car shifting lanes to get to the shoulder without a signal, pay attention, it will save you. Just thought I would share something I saw and learned from today.

Another newbie question..Went out on the bike at lunch today and I live in an area with plenty of stop signs and lights. When I stop at a stop sign, especially a 4 way, I am coming to a complete stop and putting both feet down, looking carefully and then I make my right turn when all is clear. This process, even when the intersection is clear, still takes me 5-6 seconds maybe. Perhaps, since I am a beginner, I am starting more carefully into turn, don't want to stall etc. I would say that a good percentage of drivers get pissed off when you take too long, some have even illegally passed me after the turn in the same direction, while I am accelerating.

So, question is. Should I continue to do what I am doing and improve my stop and takeoff speed over time OR if the intersection is obviously clear and there are cars behind me, should I coast almost to a complete stop, but without putting my feet down (or maybe one foot), take off right away if it's clear ? I do notice that most motorcyclists will do this even though you are supposed to come to complete stop.

I'm at 5100 miles now, and I've been filling it up with fuel with an octane rating of 87 since I bought it. I'll now starting using 91 or higher. Does anyone think I have caused any internal damage to the engine parts with a lower fuel octane rating for the past 5100 miles? Hope it's not too late.

A comment from Buellosaurus about his Seca started a thought . . . He mentioned his Yamaha was a 'she' and had documentation to prove it. I (and I may be in the minority here) have always thought of each of my bikes as being 'he' - in the masculine. Whenever I walk into the garage, I always greet them with a "Good morning boys!" I guess none of my bikes look 'sexy' or 'sleek' to me. They just look like they were made to run hard, take no crap, and look bad-ass. My wife's Honda CRV is a 'she' . . . our tent trailer is a 'she' . . . hmmm.

Buellosaurus called his Yamaha a 'prissy little bitch' . . . but I bet that prissy little bitch can light her tires up like nobody's business and run your ass over when you twist 'her' throttle, and she's not gonna take any crap from anyone either . . . hmmm again.

So WHAT makes your bike a 'he' or a 'she'?:confused::confused:

Got a set of entry-level track boots on sale at the local chain store, but found I couldn't get along with them. They are way too stiff moving the left foot up to shift and I found I was having trouble getting it into the next gear up. I finally had to cast them aside in favor of a nice (but more expensive ) set of touring boots which are much more flexible in the toe up/down direction.

Are all track boots like this ? - or is it just my technique ?

Since I have had some time off work, not because I deserve it, but because of the lack of.

I read in another topic from Eye, that he took a ride and noticed how many places were closed up.

Since I am in the transportation industry, yes I do get a lot of windshield time, but not on a bike, in a truck. I had seen this situation Eye spoke about starting years ago.

The sad truth is it is hitting everywhere and hitting hard. I see so many places of business shut down, that many places are starting to get so rundown it looks like a war zone.

With the new regulations and health care act starting to take hold this year, I have seen a huge outbreak of companies closing their doors to avoid paying the penalties and taxes for owning a business.

So where is the economy really at. I say a decline. I live in a small township in Indiana. I have seen all the hobby shops, pet shops and non essential stores close. I am starting to see resale shops close and that tells me no one is buying anything they don't need to survive.

Now on the other hand I have seen a couple of areas prosper, but most of those areas have politicians, doctors and other high earning people in them.

So what I would like is to have everyone tell the truth and state do they live where the economy is getting better, seems the same or normal or going to hell.

I am from San Pierre Indiana, Poverty stricken, retirement community of 127 people and in decline.

I have been hearing some interesting things that we the people generally have no clue about, unless you are in a field that is affected.

I have been watching our transportation department for many a years, and have not seen anything to improve any situation without hurting business with new regulations or taxes that prevent a company from prospering and then be able to pay said taxes and fees.

Today the economy has become very weak and due to that has affected my company to the point, do we, or do we not continue. Since the wonderful take over of the USA by the left wing political agenda, and the people who refuse to work because of a promise and their uninformed vote.

We were able to get the affordable health care act, which will destroy all independent or small business, with new taxes and regulations that will not only affect the business, but also the employee.

We thought that was enough, NOT SO. For all of us who do work, the pilot program is running in several states, and it is working to the governments advantage as always. ( BOHICA ) is just it. We are not only losing our privacy, but we will give it up to continue to drive in the near future.

With the so close to passing, and we don't even know what form of regulation or tax it is under, ( SO WELL HIDDEN ) from we the people. The new VMT is not far away. VMT ( Vehicle Miles Traveled ) is a new way to Tax us to death, and also you have to be able to be tracked. Thanks to On Star a wonderful bailed out company along with GM who has it on the GM vehicle from new.

Not only will we be paying high fuel prices, now we all will be taxed per mile as we drive. Some exemptions would be to allow us to go to work, go the grocery store, but anything of entertainment will be taxed heavily as its not necessary or practical in the governments eyes. So if you think you deserve a vacation, you are going to pay.

I am doing some more looking into this, so all my information is not 100%, some what, I have heard and read on certain documents I have had the pleasure to get a hold of.

http://www.transportationissuesdaily...vacy-concerns/

This is the last in a short series on my personal experience with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Beginning Rider Course (BRC). The third and final day of the program was completed today.

The participants again gathered in the parking lot at 6:45 am. Greetings were made by those in the class as the riders filtered in. A sense of camaraderie had been established from the tiring previous day and it was good to see familiar faces.

We pushed our motorcycles out onto the range. This time I swapped over to a Yamaha XT225. It was slightly more high-spirited than the TW200, but still very easy to ride.

The schedule for the day included exercises 10 through 17 as well as a skills exam and written test covering information in the MSF manual.

The riding began with the dreaded box. Even some of the more experienced riders, myself included, struggled a bit with making clean U-turns in the tight confines.

After the first few exercises, the new riders in the group were showing marked improvement. Those that were struggling a little with starting and stopping were looking pretty confident and professional in their maneuvers.

One of the most fun exercises involved running over pieces of 2X4 laid out around the course. Personally, I was trying to see how much air I could get over the wood and instructor Greg assured me he could see daylight under the tires.

After the skills exam, we headed back into the air conditioned classroom to take the written test. This was multiple choice and easy to complete correctly if attention was paid in the classroom over the last couple days.

After the class, those that passed the exams were given the good news and those that had failed were in for a letdown. No one that attended the class was counciled out early and I suspect a good learning experience was shared by all.

Driving home from work last Monday down 441 had a group of cars lock up in front of me. Got on the brakes hard and tried to go as far right as possible, but with cars in the right lane made that pretty hard. Started going down and clipped the bumper of the jeep in front of me, hit the street at around 40mph. My fulmer mesh jacket did its job, small tear in the shoulder, the Dickies held up nicely with only a small hole, but still scraped up my knees, helmet did its job though only got a little damage as my head only bounced thrice or twice. The car I hit isnt going to come after me for damages, which is nice.

Ended up going to the emergency room Tuesday night due the swelling in my right hand not going down and the pain getting worse. Ended up breaking the first metacarple in my hand and dislocating it, and crushing a bone in my wrist. Got surgery Wednesday to fix it all they had to remove a bone in my wrist so down to 205. Needless to say I am done riding for a while, and depending on how my wrist heals may be done for longer than just a bit.
I don't plan on selling my first to upgrade later. I'm going to keep it for a long time I hope.
Why should I not get this? What would you say would be a better buy that's comperable in designe? Comfort, looks, and value in that order are my deciding factors.

I ride a Honda rebel 250 and laid it down in the rain about a week ago. The bike still operates but the gears are messed up. I can switch into all the different gears but the bike rides like it is in first. I can get it up to 30 or 40 mph but it takes a while and there is no real power behind it. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

You may wonder what became of the KZ1000 project I was doing over the winter.
Well, as soon as it began to warm up, I unceremoniously booted it off the Handy Lift and rolled my little Seca 550 up in it's place.
This little jewel hasn't been on the road for a few years now. It's been begging my for attention for quite some time now, and I just couldn't put it off any longer, so up it went.
Here's a run-down of what has been happening:

Actually, it began five years ago, when my Seca's chain chucked a couple rollers, mid-season.
Since I have other bikes to ride, no big deal. The Seca sat out the season and I ordered a chain and few few gaskets & other doo-dads over the winter.
Come spring, I fitted the chain, gaskets, etc and fired it up to find fuel pouring from the carb bank. Harrumph. After pulling the carbs and opening them up, the fuel rail o-rings were found hard as a rock and leaking like a sieve. Plus, the carb manifolds were hard, cracked and non-pliable, battery done for, and tires dry-rotted. So, it sits.....I have other bikes to ride, remember? And they break too....
Fast-forward to 2013.....I've had enough of my pearl-white baby sitting and collecting flies and spiders.....a few bucks come my way, I order tires, intake manifolds and carb o-rings. Change the manifolds. Change the o-rings. I hang the bank last night and put fuel pressure to them......now fuel is pouring out of the inlet tee! Pull the bank and notice the throttle cable has broken strands by the bleeding holes in my fingertips...ouch! Sigh....email parts guy again, more parts on the way.
Note to self...DO NOT let Seca "sit out the season" ever again!
More as it happens.........

In a recent article, I relayed my experiences with the first evening of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Beginning Rider Course (BRC). The second day of the course was completed today.

It was an early start for the group of 21 riders taking the MSF BRC. The class started at 6:45 am and some of the participants had traveled over two hours to reach the course location. It was still fairly cool outside as the students were lined up for a gear inspection near the well-regimented lineup of class motorcycles.

Those that owned helmets had them checked for DOT or Snell certifications while those that did not own one were fitted for a loaner. Gloves, long sleeves, and boots were checked as well as eye wear for those without shields on their helmets.

Scott Haas, the Coordinator of the Northern Illinois University Motorcycle Safety Project, called over the 6 potential instructors taking the course as well as 5 other students. The other 10 students were assigned to a second group. We were then matched up with our motorcycles roughly by height. The shorter riders were equipped with Honda Rebels or Nighthawks, while the taller folks got the fat-tired, low-geared Yamaha TW200 models.

We then pushed our motorcycles about 100 yards to the range and went over the start up procedure, control configuration, hand signals, and some range safety rules.

Once the motorcycles were started, the class proceeded to familiarize ourselves with the clutch friction zone, first by rocking the motorcycles then by duck walking across the range a few times. That was exercise one.

After eight more exercises and six hours later, the students had progressed from simply rocking their motorcycles using the clutch to accomplishing a cone weave, shifting to third gear and back down again, and quick stops. Although half of the class were seasoned riders, the new riders that made up the other half did very well. There were a few stalls and a couple of out-of-control moments from the new riders, but they always recovered quickly and kept a positive attitude.

After a one-hour lunch break, we returned to the classroom which was wonderfully air-conditioned. We got into the same groups as the previous night and spent the next two hours going over the course material.

The third and final day of the course starts in the morning.

The next few articles will break from tradition and be somewhat autobiographical. I recently started the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCoach program in hopes of spending some weekends this summer and fall helping train new riders.

As part of the MSF Rider Coach curriculum, it is required that the Beginner Riding Course (BRC) be completed. What follows are my personal experiences with the program.

The first night of the course was spent in a classroom of the local community college. There were a total 36 participants that were divided into two groups. One group was the early class, which would start at 6:45 am on Saturday and the later class would start at 10:00 am. 21 people elected to take the early class, which was the group I was part of.

Of the 21 in my class, 6 of us were prospective instructors.

The class was divided into three groups and our first assignment was to interview another student so we could introduce them to the rest of the class. This was a good bonding exercise and got people talking to each other.

After introductions were made, each group was assigned a section of the MSF manual to study for a few minutes, then each group discussed their assigned section with the rest of the class. A video was then displayed to reinforce the lesson. This procedure was repeated a few times, covering more of the manual.

The instructors then went over the range signals to be used the next day for the riding exercises. They also explained the required gear for the course, some range safety rules, and the fact that some people may be counciled out of the course if it is determined that they pose a safety risk to themselves or others.

Four hours after the start of the program, we were dismissed for the night to get some rest for an early start the next day.

my budget now is $1,500, it will be a commuter for 90% of its use, occasional road trips, running, titled, or a complete bike that needs some work, but will be a much better value in the end... like an old british thumper.. i want something around the 1970s era with a kickstarter, and large aftermarket support so finding parts arent too difficult to find

bikes ive been considering so far include:

Yamaha SR500/XT500/TT500
Yamaha XS400 or XS500
yamaha RD350 (depending on what the actual fuel economy is)
Kawasaki KZ400
various 1 and 2 cylinder bikes with a good community and aftermarket

ive owned only hondas up to this point and now im looking to escape them and have some variety...

so feel free to ask me more questions, make suggestions, or talk about what makes certain bikes special, and worth keeping around for many years to come?

Hello fellow riders! I have had my bike for a glorious two-years and love it! When I bought it used - great story there, I was only given one key for the ignition and one for the fuel. This made me nervous and I don't want to lose it. There is no dealership within many miles of here and I was told by a Yamaha dealer (via a friend) that 'any' hardware store should be able to copy the keys I have. Here is my question.....Where should I go? Is there a box store (Lowes, Menards, etc.) that might best do this? Would they have 'the' key that I need? I tried to smaller hardware stores (mom and pop stores) and neither could do it although they tried. Thanks for a tip to save a few dollars at the dealership (if possible). Also, I noticed online I can buy a 'blank' Yamaha motorcycle key for about $7.00. I assume if I buy this, then the hardware store could copy? Enjoy the weather!
Bike is a 2005 Yamaha 1100 Vstar Custom!

All it needs is a chain guard and a new battery. Runs like a dream too. Love everything about this bike. It's got a very approachable, classy, vintage, antique feel to it. I love that it's a smaller bike because it really fits my style. I was actually looking for a moped before I ran across this beauty. 63ccs of raw POWER! Lol It would be a nice addition for any motorcycle collector or one who appreciates it well enough. It's got a really nice deeper sound to it than I thought it would have. Nice pillow seat. Creates a lot of nostalgia around town. Feels good to ride around on this thing. A warm summer ride is where it's at.

Obviously I'm not going to sew Hells Angels across the back, but from what I understand some patches are earned and not just bought.

I was hoping someone could clue me in, I'm not interested in joining a motorcycle club or even a riding club to find these things out. I just don't want to get knocked off my bike for what I'm wearing.

In fact, if anyone wants to go into detail about what certain patches are earned and for what, and what patches mean to certain groups and anything and everything I would appreciate it.

The first bike that I owned was a Kawasaki Ninja 500r. I am so glad that I did not start on a smaller bike because it did not take long to get bored of this bike. I would say that it is more of a city than a hi-way bike. You can drive it on the hi-way but it is not ideal for this type of bike. Maybe the 650r is different. Good city bike though and a good bike to learn on nonetheless.

After 1 season of riding that bike I sold it and got a GSXR 750. What a difference. I absolutely love this bike. The way it handles, corners, accelerates, brakes, it has it all. I love how responsive the brakes and accelerator are. I actually feel a lot safer on this bike because it makes it easier to get out of any trouble that I feel around me. Like when someone wants to ride my ass.

When riding a bike I find that not only do you have to be aware of what is going on around you, but also 2 block ahead of you and a block to either side of you. And also expect everyone to cut you off, slam on their brakes, change lanes at anytime, ect. That has made me always prepared for the worst to happen. And it has, but I was ready for it. Watch that person in the left lane for he will be making a right turn without signalling and cut you off. Amazing what some drivers do out there.

My favourite type of riding is hi-way and medium speed roads, on and off ramps, cloverleaf's, s bends. I love how my GSXR eats up the corners and the precise response of the bike it self. The oneness you feel with the bike is such a great feeling.

The difference between my Ninja and GSXR on the Hi-way was night and day. At 120kmph(75mph) the GSXR feels super smooth like I am just cruising along. At 120kmph on my 500r you could really feel the vibrations of the motor and it was at a really high rpm. You punch the 500r at 120kmph and not much happens. Punch the GSXR at 120 and it is a whole different ballgame. When getting up to hi-way speed the GSXR will do 120 in first gear at the drop of the hat. The 500r will get to 120 fairly quick but it is three gears latter.

Anyways, if anyone wants to share there experience so far or what type of riding the like or what they have learned or what they have started on and are on now, I would love to hear it.

Retired US Marine, Victory Motorcycle rider, and actor R. Lee Ermey, also known as The Gunny, will participate in the upcoming Rolling Thunder motorcycle ride in Washington DC. This will be the 26th annual Rolling Thunder ride, which takes place on May 26th.

Rolling Thunder honors US veterans and remembers the sacrifices they have made to secure our freedoms. Ermey, besides being an avid motorcycle rider, is an outspoken advocate for the rights of US military personnel, both active and discharged.

Ermey is perhaps best known for his role as a Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant in the film Full Metal Jacket.

Victory Motorcycles has retained Ermey as an official spokesman for the company for several years now. He will be representing Victory Motorcycles in the ride. “We enjoy the freedom to ride because of the service and sacrifice of our nation’s military personnel, and we’re honored to have the Gunny represent our brand at this Memorial Day weekend event,” said Steve Menneto, VP of Victory Motorcycles.

Ermey will make scheduled appearances at four DC-area Victory dealerships the day before the ride. He will be riding his Victory between the dealerships and invites others to ride along. Victory's Facebook page has information as to where and how riders can join The Gunny for a ride.
My headlight won't work. Everything else Is fine including the fuse. I have power at the fuse but nothing to the light.ive heard that it could be the starter switch so I pulled it apart and fooled around with it but can't see a problem. It's a little dirty in there but not sure if this could be it.i can't see anything wrong in there. What could this be? I'm going out again tomorrow to try again but I don't know what to do. I don't want to buy another starter switch and this not be the problem. Can I bypass the starter switch(headlight dimmer)? Or how can I verify this is the problem. I've checked a lot of wiring and I'm going to snap soon. I don't want to ride with no light. Please someone give me some suggestions to check tomorrow. Thanks

PS. Posted this on another forum too and got many comments asking if I smoke and ride...the answer is not often at all. But would think this product would be useful when I'm out fishing too! :p

How many times have you heard people say, "I ride my own ride, but..." followed the story of a fabulous fall? Or have you heard someone simply solve the mystery of "What happened?" with "You didn't ride your own ride." For all the riding our own rides we do, you'd think there wouldn't be do so dang many people crashing. I think I have an insight into this that I like to call the "Dinner Glass Effect". Sounds cool, could be a master's thesis on hydration while eating or the psychological effects of the shape and color of a glass effecting consumption amount and frequency but, it's not.

The Dinner Glass Effect is about drunk driving. Imagine, at this very moment, you are sitting in a restaurant and having dinner. Take a little inventory of what's on the table with you. Breadsticks. Pasta. Salad. Empty plates. Wine glass.

WAIT. Wine glass? How many people are with you? Count. If you are with 4 people there should be 3 wine glasses. If there are 2 people then only 1 glass...because if you are drinking there has to be the designated driver. Perhaps your argument is that since you're only having a glass of wine with dinner you don't need a designated driver. Sure, you don't drive drunk but you will drink and drive...I mean have a drink and drive...errr...consume an adult beverage and drive...damn, there's just no way to make that sound responsible is there?

That is the Dinner Glass Effect. It's about personal tolerance and excuse; where do you actually draw the line? If you have a glass of wine with dinner and drive to the movie you are--by definition--drinking and driving. I know that sounds a tad zealous but, if you have a beer at a barbecue and leave to catch your kid's T-ball game you're drinking and driving because alcohol is in your system, but not a lot. Imagine you hit a light pole. That's OK--right? I mean you had a beer an knocked a pole over so big deal. But if you hit a bus full of nuns and orphans and one gets hurt then you're a driver involved in an accident that has alcohol in your system. Somewhere out there is there a mystical point where too much alcohol moves you from average innocent consumer to premeditated drunk. It's not measured by .08 but by how much damage and mayhem you cause. That's the Dinner Glass Effect: one glass and hit a curb is not a big deal but, one glass and hit a pedestrian and you're in a world of hurt. Simply add: "Police believe alcohol was involved" to any sentence and see how that feels.

I really don't know where "having a drink" and "drinking and driving" separate. As I said, it seems to be a matter of degrees. When we apply that same fuzzy math to "Ride your own Ride" we find the same calculation taking place. When do you cease to "ride your own ride" seem to depends on how hard you crash and how honest you are with yourself. All that rationale of "he only hit a curb" v. "nuns & orphans aflame" comes into play when we talk of exceeding our own riding limits because we look at a simple bruise far differently than we do a compound fracture.

I regularly watch riders violate the "ride your own ride" axiom. Ride sweeper for a group ride (or just slip in behind a group) and you'll know what I'm talking about. As soon as the 'slinky effect' gets going those riding in the back are in real trouble. The Slinky is when the first rider hits a turn he may do it at speed but the following riders coming behind him will pile up in the turn, get a little balled up and by the time they get through they're getting left behind so they hurry up to catch up and then get all over the brakes before the next turn...like a Slinky. Watch this from behind and you'll see the scurry and slither as riders (trying not to get left behind or be the slow one) push well past their comfort zones. Those poor SOBs aren't riding their own ride, they are in survival mode. We've all been in that place where ego drives us to work a little harder, brake a little later, throttle up sooner. We don't want to be the slow one.

To my mind "Ride your own ride" is used mostly as a cop out . It's an excuse and a shout into the darkness that is all sound and no flesh. Tell me what "ride your own ride" means. Define it. The only real answer I can ever get from anybody is that if you crash you're not riding your own ride. Duh. That's a retrospective subjective measure. That's kind of like asking, "What happened" getting the answer, "You fell down and went boom." The follow up is a natural, "How do I avoid that in the future?" Answered by, "Don't fall down and go boom."

There may be no clear definition for "Ride your own" but there are some distinct symptoms. Symptoms may be the best measure because if you start feeling a couple of distinct ways it points to your discomfort and discomfort means you're no longer in that skill space that is uniquely yours. In the past I've discussed the symptoms of fear that manifest when you're riding by describing it as "riding tight". Riding tight is when you've got tension in your body, if your arms are tight, your shoulders hunched or your jaw clenched then you are riding tight. Fear tightens you up, it's your body getting ready to flee or fight. In essence it is your subconscious way of readying for disaster.

Think: your subconscious is readying for disaster. Or, more appropriately, your lizard brain is saying, "I'm scared." If you're frightened there's a reason for it and that reason is you're probably not riding your own ride any more. Pushed out of your comfort zone the instinct for self-preservation is saying, "DO NOT DIE!" Objectively there's no measure for riding outside your abilities. Sure, you may run wide on the exit or be too hard on the brakes going in, but the bottom line is that this is fully a personal, subjective call. Yes, you can be blissfully ignorant of the fact that you are riding over your head, but that's a special kind of stupid that requires you to ignore clear signals from your brain. You can willfully ignore what your safety oriented brain is telling you--I know I can--but ignoring means you're aware and actively choose to continue with an activity. We all do that. We all say the risk is worth the reward and we push somewhere we're not comfortable going. Thanking risks is natural part of growing a skill; sometimes you suck it up, take a chance and push forward.

When you're riding a nice forest road heading to lunch in that beautiful mountain hamletThat's probably not what you're looking to do on. What's amazing to me is that I know when I'm going on a ride that is I am going to be pushing it. I know when I'm on a ride I don't expect to push it. AND I know when a ride I didn't expect to push it turns into a ride where I'm pushing it. The trick is to admit the difference to yourself and accept responsiblity when a friendly ride becomes a risky one. A ride's mood and tempo can change on the fly and it is our responsibility to feel that and make the decision to continue or to retreat. Honestly? Sometimes you are weighing fear of crashing against the fear of embarrassment and since ego and self-image are in play, reason and fear of injury are easily overruled. Riding your own ride is about knowing and accepting yourself. Once your teeth are set do you have what it takes to unlock your jaw and let it go or do you hang on no matter where things go. I've been suckered into riding over my head. You've been suckered too. The real question is: are you willing to admit you made the decision, you poured the glass, and drank the wine?

"Ride your own ride." Easy to say. Tough to do.

this may sound like a heat of the moment anger post sort of thing.. but im thoroughly angry at my bike.. i might just sell the damn thing at this point, nothing seems to go right, and worst of all because of the CHEAP metal used in making the screws, a screw stripped out and upon attempting to drill it out for a broken screw extractor the tip of the bit snapped, and the rest of the drill bit left in the drill went through my thumb

so now im tying with a hole in my left thumb.. angry, and just fed up... i paid $300 for this thing.. have literally $100 extra into it parts i cant simply use on another bike... the rest of the investments in coils, cartridge fork emulators, springs, aftermarket tail light and turn signals, headlight ears, etc i can easily put into another bike as these parts are pretty much universal

so... have you ever gotten to that point where you felt like using your as target practice with something of a larger caliber?.. i gotta say with some of the things i learned on this bike i have to say old hondas, though reliable, were still pretty cheaply put together

Hot weather riding is almost worse that really cold weather; there is a limit to how light you can dress. I'll admit that when it is hot I ride without a jacket and enjoy that feeling of freedom and the wind on my body. Several years ago I bought a long sleeve t-shirt made of some synthetic material from Silver Eagle that offers some degree of SPF protection, and allows the air to flow easily through it, making it ideal for really hot weather (other than it does not offer any crash protection, obviously). The shirt is in that glow-in-the-dark lime green color which is also great for high visibility. But it appears that this company is no longer making this product since their website has the shirt only available in either Small or 4X Large sizes. I am hoping somebody knows of a similar product that is available on the internet since one shirt is not quite enough. They also made short sleeve shirts of the same material, but that leaves your arms exposed to the sun more than I like since I've already had multiple skin cancers and don't really want to increase my risk for more.

Honda has designed several changes for the 2014 CFR250R. The championship-winning off-roader was taken back to the drawing board for many improvements.

The 249 cc single will have a new cylinder head. The compression ratio has been increased to 13.5:1 and a new porting design has been implemented. The low and mid-range power has been increased by tweaking the injector timing and angle. The airbox has been changed to allow for better airflow and to make the filter element easier to swap out when dirty. The gearing has been widened a bit to take advantage of the increase in power output.

Lowering the center of gravity was also a priority for the 2014 model. The aluminum frame has lower spars and the dual under-seat exhaust system has been shortened to centralize the mass. A new swing arm and linkage has also been added.

The bodywork has been adjusted slightly and the fuel capacity raised a bit from 1.5 gallons to 1.66 gallons. New front and rear rotor covers have been added to the braking system.

Pricing has not been released for the 2014 CFR250R at this time.
I want a sportbike, one with low end torque like my V Rod has, and according to the guys on the sportbike forums, that will come from the liter bike class. Im going Sat to a local "Bike Mall" that has nothing but motorcycles. The two bikes im seriously considering looking at are:

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R
Aprilia RSV4

Is there anyone here that owns either bike? If I get the Ninja itll be that amazing red/black combo, and the Aprilia would be the matte black option.
I'd just like some opinions of fellow riders on which bike they'd choose and why. Maybe throw some other bikes in with reasons why you'd choose them?
