Wal mart has a pair of brahma swat team boots for under $40. Me being the cheapskates I am bought them. The look alright. Comfortable steel toe. But I can barely fit them under my shifter! I'm guessing it's the steel toe. Any nice looking budget friendly lower profile in the toe, boots out there?

Why not take the shift lever off and re-clock it a little higher ob the splines?

I had to do this on my old bike for the same reason. Problem Solved!

I don't have any problems with my composite (same profile just different material / weight) toe boots when I wear them to ride

Use them a bit more, they'll become more flexible. Also, change the position of your shifter.
If your bike can do it, change the position of your rearset. Moving it to the rear, might make it more comfortable to flex down to get under it.

I use cowboy boots.
They're high so there's no chance of gettin' a burned leg.

I'm finding that a bit with my Red Wing steel toes 971 boots. Wondering if the toe/sole are a bit thick for my bike.

I've got 2 pair of Redwings. I don't know the model numbers off hand. The pair I ride with has "smooth" leather soles and a narrow toe. The other pair has a wider toe (steel toe) and heavy vulcanized rubber bottom, grooved for traction for lack of better words. I haven't tried this pair for riding. I'm thinking that the wider toes could be an issue shifting.

You should be able to adjust the shifter by loosening it or removing it, and dialing the shifter to be a little higher.
Another reason I like toe/heel shifters

I wear probably a more traditonal type cowboy boot, squared toe, I did however find that I needed to get rid of the leather soles quickly and have them retreaded with skid resistant soles..............
