When i bought the bike, it came with a new back tire but a pretty bald front one. the sides of the tire still have good tread but not the center. how bald does it need to be before i should replace it??

Bald? Replace it immediately. Your life depends on those tires, and you only have two of them.

Yeah definatly get that tire replaced ASAP. You still have all the tred on the sides, so sure you may have traction in the corners, but what about an emergency stop. Its gonna make a crappy day if your front tire locks up and you cant stop.

Yea, unfortunately on motorcycles the tires wear differently than cars, by different I mean unevenly. Its funny you can always tell how the rider rode a bike by looking at the tires....lots of tread on the sides and bald in the middle, not a corner guy, even wear with the sides down, he hits the corners a lot.

my problem is usually the other way around: nice new tire up front and a balding one in the back. wen i first started riding(a chinse scooter lol) my sides would wear more on one side than the other because id lay into righanders and not so much left :)
