View Full Version : New pipes ruined?

I installed my new cobras yesterday. When I took my test drive they sounded great! After a little while of riding around I could smell something burning. When I pulled over I could see smoke.
After checking the bike out, I found a terri cloth melted to the pipes. I must have left it laying on the front fender from the day before and it blew back and hit the new pipes.
Are they ruined or is there a way to get it off without ruining the finish? I thought about putting my heat shield over it once I remove most of it.

WD-40 and elbow grease has worked for me in the past.

Gallons of elbow grease though. You could also contact cobra to see what they think, they're pretty helpful.

I have never tried this, but I have heard that oven cleaner will remove burned on cloth and plastic from pipes without damaging the finish. It's worth a shot.

Simple Green and an 16oz can of elbow grease... I cleaned up a set of Cobras with a sponge that had a rough side to it... finish it up with some chrome polish :D

I'd only try this in an inconspicuous spot like on the bottom or back side of the pipes.

Roadster makes a good point. Try any cleaning technique somewhere that it won't cause you to cry yourself to sleep every night if it messes it up.

I would really be careful of getting it on the paint. Probably would ruin your day.

I have used the oven cleaner. It worked great, I just sprayed it on while hot, let it sit until cool before washing the bike, took 2 or 3 times to get it all.

Are the pipes chrome? when you get most of it off you can use really fine steel wool to clean chrome up nice withought scratching it.

you can take a razor blade and scrap the thick stuff off but be gentle and go over it with 00000 steel wool

This kind of stuff stuck to pipes shure seems like it's permenent and will resist almost all chemical cleaners. Allot of people live with it but the best way I've found is to carefully scrape the area with the edge of a sharp razorblade and finish up with chrome cleaner and allot of elbow grease. Even the little spots you can't scrape off are tough but will eventually come off. Good Luck
