Ahhh Sebring.....love the the track there. I grew up in St. Pete and have lived all over this fine country of ours but, now live in Ft. Myers. Just can't get the sand out of my shoes I guess. I've got a 78 Bonnie 750 in my shop right now. When I'm finished with the restoration on it, I'll post some pix if anyone is interested.

When I took this bike for a test ride in So. L.A. I had just merged onto the 605 freeway at full throttle gammin thru the gears when, unknown to me at the time, the chains master link had popped off. All I knew was I was quickly approaching triple digit speed, still in the slow lane, and then bang, my rear wheel lock-up. While 18 wheelers where dodging, wheeving and checking up, I was trying to physically drag the bike over to the shoulder without getting creamed. Once out of the way of traffic, I saw that the chain had wrapped itself tight around the sprocket. I unwrapped it and pushed the bike off the freeway and to the nearest gas station and got a new master link. Sold the bike not long after that.

This is a 62 Bonnie that one of our customers brought to us from Tennessee. Is this thing sweet or what? I was told it was a barn find. After some rework on the wiring and a few mechanical corrections she popped off and runs like a champ.

Hey Capt.

I guess that pan is to catch oil.

I've taken my engine apart 4 times on my '73 Bonnie and have yet to find where the oil comes from.

bsa_bob

I restored a really nice 70 bonne then sold it, to a jeweler in bankok. He came and picked it up and loved it. He said: first thing" I remember them well " they all leaked........jus not as bad as the harleys! And i had mine restore to flawless condition.....it "leaked" but only on the side stand, on the center stand not a drop.I just sent it away two weeks ago, he hasn't called back .so he must be in love with it.
That was something i never liked is a vehicle or bike leaking oil in my garage, although lots a guys don't mind it. But it was a selling point with me.Not the only reason. cheers bsa_bob

Hey Capt.

Yup! That be the prerequisite OIL PAN alright. If it's a Vintage or classic Brit bike or an AMF Harley, I don't even ask if it leaks. It gets a pan under it right away before it sits at my shop. There are a whole lot of places those things can leak from. Some of the most common I have dealt with are the primary cover ( especially the chain adjustment screw assy.), the bottom seals of the pushrod tubes and the scavenge oil line fitting at the base of the crankcase.
Like I said before, there are multiple places these things can leak at and do.

Well the oil pan looks good to me; I'll get one this week.
Someone had mentioned that keeping it on the center stand results in less oil leaks, but I removed my center stand in '78 when I modified my pipes and routed them under the frame.

Hey Bob,
If you haven't already, and your bike is still stock, check the chain oiler control valve. On most models its just inside the oil tank under the cap. You'll notice an adjustment screw that is plumbed to an outside line that, if you chase it, should lead to an area just above your chain. Most late model chains don't need this anymore and you can tighten that adjustment screw to shut the oil flow off. These oiler lines on the Meridan Triumphs have been the bain of more than one mechanic trying to figure out where on earth the bike is dripping oil from.
So have been the crankcase vent tubes. Again, on most models, there is a crankcase oil scavenge line that runs from under the motor, up along side the oil tank to an H tube fitting, and then splits. One line goes to the top of the oil tank and the other is routed up and over the underside of the rear fender exiting (venting) just behind the license plate mount. This setup allows oil to drip out of that vent line onto your rear tire....not good. The other problem is that in the course of many years guys tend to replace the old rubber vent and scavenge lines with a tendency to relocate the H fitting below the oil level in the tank (for easier access) causing a siphon effect that allows for a stream of oil to spew out the vent line onto the rear tire. Again.....really not good. These are just a few things ya might want to check out if your the proud owner of a Meridan Triumph.

I figure I'd post these pictures here as this is how my bike looks as of 2 days ago. (though the pictures are from around Christmas of last year). She's now been stripped of her tins and is awaiting the paint booth, for a custom spray. Hopefully it will be an improvement, but we shall see.

I've been considering a thruxton or a moto guzzi v7 racer. My dad has a '10 thruxton, so I'm thinking it would be a little bit cheezy if we rode two thruxtons together.

My parents had a couple of Sprites in the late 50s early 60s so I have a soft spot for Healeys.

Here are a couple of shots of my beloved Speed Trip:

The original owner was a photographer, which accounts for the uncommonly high quality of these pics. He also obsessively garaged the bike, which is why it looks so clean. Suffice to say, after four years of daily (year-round) riding on the streets of San Francisco, it's a lot more... well weathered.
