Definitely NO biking around this joint now! Got up this morning and the gauge is saying minus 11 degrees below Zero (Fahrenheit) – officially it’s minus 14 below 0 (sorry, don’t know the Celsius equivalent). Mind you the coldest temp we’ve had here (so far) in 19 years in the Black Hills has been minus 20 below. Can you top that? Sing out! ;-)

It was 26 when I headed out to do 87 miles last weekend. Got all the way up to 38. So far this winter, I've hit snow and ice a couple times, and been doused by a snow truck spraying de-icing liquid. Rides are more like off road excursions with all the sand, gravel and salt on the roads. Hoping for a break in the weather ASAP.

Dave: Yikes, I think that tops everybody?! Just curious - at what point (temperature) does Oxygen become un-breathable (turns to a Liquid then a Solid)?

Best: Goes without (?) saying hope you gave that bike an immediate wash (hose it off) after you got home! That Road Salt will make short work of it fast!

Dang, now we got Blizzard Conditions going down here (again!). Sweet.... Expecting the Power to fail any second now (always does...)! :p

It was in the early '80s, during a blizzard and severe cold snap tha hit the northeast...mostly New York. The temperature was in the -20s F but with the wind chill, it was -48 F. I was making a trip with a tractor-trailer and delivering to Painted Post, New York (Ingersol-Rand). I passed no other moving vehicles, except for police cars...the roads were lined with frozen-up cars & trucks. I'd cut my fuel with 70% kerosene so the only problem I had was heat. Even with the notorious "cook you out of the cab" Mack heater....I had to stop for about 10 minutes, every 5 miles or so, just to defrost the windshield. The normally 8 hour round trip, took over 14 hours to complete. I hate winter!

coldest i've been in so far is the 10s. but between christmas and new years, i'm going camping in the boundary waters of minnesota. i hear it's hit -40 up there...

kschilk, that reminds me of a story, too. lol. me and some friends were headed to a paintball tournament one weekend when it randomly decided to drop to 18 and rain (unheard of in texas in march. it doesn't even hit 18 during most winters). we were slipping and sliding all over the interstate to austin, tx with the defroster on so high we had to roll down the windows to cool off.

coldest I've seen, I think it was like -10 back when I was in highschool once.... colder with the high winds out...I wasn't foolish enough to brave that, just stayed in side for that one...

When I was in boot camp, it got down to 19 fareighnheight during a training excersize which we had to spend 24 hours manning an LP/OP, and it was windy... I don't know how they do now, but when I went through boot, none of the high speed cold weather gear is issued to basic trainees.

As I type this, it is -17. Overnight low -24. It should warm all the way up to -13 for a high today. By wednesday it is supposed to get above 0. This is the weather that gets you to appreciate summer.

I just bought new riding pants and gloves. I can honestly say that between the matching coat, pants, gloves, wal-mart boots, and a good neck guard there is no temperature that I fear.

I've been out in 20(ish)F already and been totally fine. The gear has liners like a mofo and it's just impervious!

-10(ish)F at work in a unheated warehouse a few year back (worst job ever). 20 is the coldest I've ever been riding in.

Coldest on the bike has been 1C ambient - and with the windchill -11c.

I don't really care about the cold - I care about ICE! Avoid at all costs.

My gear made me feel impervious to cold when I still had 20 degree weather as well, it was warm enough for me to even sweat a little. But once single digits came around it was a whole different story.

Coldest temperature I have ridden in was 28F.

Hard to say the coldest temperature I have ever been in. Went to Navy boot camp in Great Lakes, IL during the winter months. Got so cold that frostbite on exposed skin wasn't uncommon.

To answer LRG: Oxygen turns from a vapor to a gas at -297.31F and from liquid to solid at -361.82F. So even though -58F is pretty darn cold, it's nowhere near causing oxygen to undergo a phase change.

I did not ride in that tempature but have ridden in -42f on a honda 90.
But the question was what was the coldest temp you have been in.

And that -58f was not counting windchill factor. don,t think it was used back then.
but propane gas forms a liquid at around -40f
used to fill lpg tanks in timmins and let some out on the ground at -45f it just sat there looking like water...

Ah, the memories...."Uniform of the day....wear your locker". :( Worst part was, we were issued our heavy, warm Navy peacoats but we weren't allowed to wear them until after graduation. On the upside, it was too cold to put us through the gas chamber....:)...kinda' glad I missed out on that ride.

I was in Tenn. for ONE winter. Coldest in 50 yrs. and worst ice storm they had in 100 yrs. I was on the way to work and it was -4. Don't know if it got any colder or not and I'm sure wind chill was colder. As I sit in New Orleans now it's cloudy and around 70ish. Supposed to be sunny with a few clouds. I see many many clouds and no sun :(

Coincidentally, I went from boot camp in Great Lakes, to Millington, TN (near Memphis) for my "A-School" (tech school). It was still kinda' cold but going from below zero to the +40s, it seemed like the tropics...at first. After being there for awhile, the constant rain and cool temps were almost as miserable as boot camp. Most of the base was built in a low spot, the place was like a bowl and even a drizzle meant a flood. I was there for over three months and probably 90% of the time, I waded through knee-deep water to get to school. As if the water wasn't enough to deal with, I quickly learned that everywhere the water goes...so do the water moccasins (snakes)! Damn, I hate snakes!!!

Coldest I have ever ridden in was 10 f for about 10 minuts on New Years day.
The coldest I have ever been in was -60f in the Canadian Arctic islands just befor Christmas. It was beyond painfull. I could find no words to describe it other than not one piece of machinery could operate. Even the trucks we ran 24 hrs and kept a fire under the diffs would not move. And we slept in tents.

For years, I had an annual tradition of taking my dirt bike out for a midnight ride in the snow, on New Year's Eve. I think the coldest I ever rode in, was in the minus single digits. I rode an air-cooled, big bore 2-stroke but even after an hour or more of throwin' snow, the engine barely even got warm. I'm startin' to remember why I quit doin' that.

I wasn't riding a bike but went to Watertown NY in the dead of winter it was -12F several days and while there we had over 80" of snow in a 24 hour period. To me, a Florida boy, below 60 I have long johns on and heavy cloths when riding.

Ok except for snow boarding and I only do that when it is around 25-70 deg and ya I have got to snow board in 70 deg before but the snow was melting very fast and I was a mess after wards all the mud but I was warm maybe a little too warm.

All: Only when I was young and foolish would I ride in the cold- anything below 32F. Once ride from PHX to Laredo, April 82 I believe, on I10, 30d and sleet, rain, wet snow while I'm on my XS1100. All my 'leading edges' were white with frost and my steel toe boots were freezing!
But not at 17! Cue-Ball in Atlanta, it's damn cold out there!

In these temps do you go real thin on the oils? I'd think the trany would be stiff to shift.

Thats cold...

Archangel
12-22-2008, 11:58 PM
At 29 deg my bike was very stiff feeling guess the chain lube and bearing lub as well as the oil had some to do with that but as soon as the oil get to temp is would not play much in to the stiff feeling
thiner oil only helps when the oil is cold after it gets up to temp the oil gets thin by its design.

Coldest I ever rode in, well raced in, was 3 years ago.
We went to a "Snow Scrambles" at Beldon Hills N.Y., (we look forward to the snow season to stud up and have some fun).:D
Well, it was @ 0 when we got there and breezey.
Hardest part was hangin' @ the pit area til your race was called. Of course I was like 3 from last, so my wait was FOREVER.
Spent most of the time by the burn barrel or in the truck.
At that temps, the suspension just doesn't want to compress, the seat is hard, the snow hard, no matter what gloves you wear, your fingers hurt, your toes are like on fire..
I gotta tell you, it was the LONGEST 1/2 hour I ever rode in.
I finished, got the bike loaded and split.
My fingers and toes were so sore when they started to thaw!
My sons and I desided right there, we weren't gonna race if it was under 5 degrees!

I ride, therefore I am!;)

Other than that I have been in -17f weather in Korea in 2001 while transporting troops out to an FTX (glad I am a truck driver and not Infantry).
I ride regularly in weather around 30 in the states (U.S.). I don't beleive in putting the bike up in the winter.
