I went to a local dealership the other day to try on some jackets to see how they fit. i did find one jacket that I did like a lot. It was the Joe Rocket Nova 2.0. My problem is that when I tried on an XL it fit but the sleeves were snug, the torso was snug, and the collar was pretty tight on my neck. Now when I tried on the 2X it seems to not restrict my movement as much (not that that smaller one did very much) but it almost seems like it could have been a tiny bit too big. Me being rather inexperienced at this doesn't know which size to get, a more snug jacket or one that is roomier.

You don't want anything that's uncomfortable because that's just going to drive you batshit crazy, but you want it as close-fitting as possible, IMO, unless you're going to be wearing heavy clothes underneath it. And I wouldn't worry about movement restriction, per se. Just see how it feels in the riding position.

So are you saying that I should buy the smaller jacket?

It depends. If you plan on wearing a sweatshirt or something else underneath it, then probably not, unless you try it on with the sweatshirt on. Also, if it's tight to the point of being very uncomfortable, then don't. But if it's the difference between form-fitting and loose, but you're still more or less comfortable in the riding position, then I'd go with the one with the tighter fit.

I had a hard time finding a jacket, tried on literally a couple of dozen styles and brands. I would suggest against Alpine Star and Joe Rocket as most of those, while fitting right in some places and not so well in others seemed to have issues with good stitching or what felt to me good armor. I finally went with https://www.euromotoaz.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=102. (https://www.euromotoaz.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=102)
Though I was lucky in getting it in a clearance at about $100 off. Clearing for winter gear, after the fact I found it kinda weird as it is a 4 season jacket. I often wear it without any liners. When it gets cold dark and foggy out I put in the windbreaker and that works really good. I am ecstatic about this jacket and highly suggest it. When sitting still you will get a little warm, but then again you are wearing a jacket. Ü

I got a jacket the other day and while trying on several jackets I found that the sleeves were to short in the riding position but were to long in the hands down position.( this bugs the crap out of me.
I wanted leather but non had a way of tightening the sleeves to prevent them from passing my hands .

I finely settled for a textile jacket with CE armor one that had this option.
the arms were as you said a little snug with a sweat shirt on but not bad with out.
