Is there any difference in protection between long cuff and short cuff gloves? What would you reccomend (sp)? I am also open to any suggestion on brands and types.

I always wear long. grinding your wrist bone/forearm off is no fun.
I like held, spidi, and a* gloves.

For colder weather the "long cuff" or gauntlet style glove will keep the cold wind from blowing up your sleeves - and give a bit more protection. Might prefer the "shorter cuff" in the summer.

+1 on the long cuff (gauntlet) for winter, tuck your jacket sleeve into the glove and stop the cold air from flowing up the sleeve to your body

OK so what I am getting is that the longer cuff doesn't necessarily offer more protection. Is this a correct assumption?

yes and no, they do help to protect your wrists more than a short cuff, but most jackets come down that far also. It is kind of hard for me to explain, I can't think of the words I want to use...lol damn it's hell getting old (and I am only 36 )

A well designed "gauntlet" glove will do a lot to save your forearm in a wreck. Even if you're wearing a good jacket, in a slide the sleeve might ride up and it doesn't have any padding to protect from the initial impact.
When weather permits I try to only use my Icon Merc gauntlets, they are very good bang for the buck when it comes to protection and comfort. I do have a pair of Power Trip Bravo short-cuff gloves which I only use when it's really hot and I'm going for a short, low speed trip.
