It is common, and almost natural for new riders to be attracted to the modern sportbike. What many don't understand is that these bikes, even the "small" 600cc models, are designed exclusively for expert riders. Everything about the machines are intended for performance. They are race bikes. They are racebikes. The 600cc sportbikes of today have more power and weigh less than the 1000cc sportbikes of 15 years ago.

From answering many questions about sportbikes, we have found two very educational articles written about why new riders should not start on sportbikes. They can be found here:

Our goal here is safety, and yours should be too. To clarify the situation, the sportbikes I am referring to are the performance racing machines, typically equipped with inline-four cylinder engines (but sometimes boxers, V-Twins, Triples and other engine configurations). Some of the common and well known models are the Honda CBRs, Suzuki GSXRs, Kawasaki ZX-Rs and Yamaha R series. There are also the high performance Ducattis, Buells, Triumphs, BMWs and bikes from other manufacturers.

Hopefully if you have read this thread and the two related articles you will have an understanding of the concerns about these bikes. Please be safe!
