First off let me stress that my main concern is safety. Is it true that leather is safer? From what little I've been told: my best bet is a leather jacket with "hard plastic" pads on the shoulders and elbows. Aside from that, I would also like one that isn't too hot, as I live in Florida. Also I want to spend about $200 if possible. Thanks

Leather is the safest in a slide. The most protective will be an armored leather jacket. Of course, this will also be the hottest...
If you're wondering about unarmored leather compared to armored textile, I would rather wear armored textile than unarmored leather (I think armor is pretty important).
"Mesh" jackets aren't very protective in a slide, so if safety is your concern, stick to textile or leather.
As for what jackets, head over to newenough and browse around. I have been really satisfied with products from Power Trip. Icon, Teknic, and Joe Rocket are other popular names. I personally think Icon jackets are overpriced.
You can head to webbikeworld.com for in-depth reviews on jackets and other gear.

Yeah, depending on where you ride, you may,(like others) eventually end up with several types of jackets. Mesh w/armor is what I wear for summer.
Depending on where you live, lots of local MC dealers have a variety of type jackets you can try on . Buy them on clearence at the end of the seasons for the best buy. or go on-line, after you try 'em on locally and find what you like and what fits. Cause sizes and arm lengths vary from one Mfg. to the next.

Ok, I found a couple on amazon that look good and have hard plastic armor under the leather. The price seems good too. Tell me what you think, does one seem better than the other, is it worth the price, most of all will it be safe? Thanks

This one might appeal to you:

Right around your price range, fares quite well in warm weather, and rather good protection as well.

Let us know how you like it.
I have an Icon textile with armor and an Icon leather with armor. I like them both, the leather is definitely much warmer.

I've got a Scorpion Stinger jacket, perf leather with armor, and it's absolutely great. I am in LA and I never overheat and it just get more comfortable every time I wear it.

I got me a z1r leather jacket and I love it, I do believe leather is the way to go. Ive seen a couple jackets that have been thru slides and they hold together very well. As far as the heat, mine does get very hot.. but you are able to take panels out to let air in. I am able to unzip my sleeves revealing mesh on the undersides still giving me the outer leather protection. I paid 300, a bit more than you were wanting to spend but its an idea.

Make sure you go to a shop first and try them on... Sizes may or may not be what you expect.
I've got an AlpineStars Stage perf leather jacket - I love it and it fits great... but I found that I needed size 46. However, my suit jackets are size 42.
Differences like that are why I'd definitely suggest trying them on and making sure you have the proper size. You may also find, like I did, that your local dealer can beat the Internet prices.

I've had good experieces with Leatherup (http://www.leatherup.com/) with real low prices, very good service, and their Xelement brand of protective clothing.
You can also get a discount of at least 10% by asking on line, which covers your shipping and more.
