so I was struck with the idea that I needed a stand for my bike engines. I am bench testing a 1974 CB550 motor right now and then I have another CB550 motor that I am rebuilding. I don't like trying to balance it on the oil pan and was short about $150 for the ones made for bike engines (last time i checked they were starting at $185 plus s/h).

So, I made this one for about $35 in parts from Lowes. This is simple, but it works for me, I have a 700 lb table in my garage to hang my engine off. Make sure you have something sturdy to mount onto if you try to duplicate.

Don't try to wrestle your engine alone... I did and almost broke my arm!

JC Whitney sells this car engine stand for $47, but needs mods for bikes

or this one too http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2016893/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2016893/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=motorcycle+engine+stand

How are you attaching the engine to the stand?

I bought a regular car engine stand a long time ago for like the one you listed from JC Whitney. I put on 90 degree angle brackets that I could attatch to my 750 engine. Works pretty good. Your set up looks like a good one too.

Let me guess....you had an Erector Set as a kid?:D

Seriously.....cool. I need to build something like that for my engine swaps. Here's a link to the one I wanted to buy-look at the price and you'll see why I passed!
Sure is neat though; wheel it up to your lift and simply bolt it in!

That's a cool engine stand, but maybe not $981 cool. :)

If I did four or more Sportster/Buell engines a year, I could justify it. As it is, the only one I seem to work on is mine.:(
Most of the work around these days involves older Japaneses bikes. I'm sure there are plenty of CB550s out there, and that stand looks like it could be adapted to a number of different configurations. I give it the thumbs-up for cost, creativity and adaptability!!
