Howdy,
I am looking into buying a new dual-sport to ride to work, and buzz around, the trails.
My question is, DR650SE or XR650L?
I am an experienced rider on street bikes, and am not afraid of a big dual-sport.
This question may get me i trouble, but oh well.
Is it a matter of personal opinion, or is one clearly better than the other.
Thanks,
AK

Welcome to the forum AK!
I'm afraid my experience with dual-sports is limited, but there are several others here that ride them. My guess would be that either of these bikes will do the job quite well. Ask around in the dual-sport forum and I'm sure you will get a dizzying array of opinions. :)

I am looking at getting a CRF230F (Honda). I really wanted to get a Yamaha 250 but they are just not affordable locally.
I plan to use the CRF230 to ride to work. I have never ridden before, so starting mostly off-road seems a safer way to go.
Unfortunately there is not much traffic on the dual-sport forum. Maybe it will pick up soon.

I vote...DRZ400SM...giggly good times...
To see one in action got to http://www.youtube.com/CaptCrashIdaho and watch any of the videos...
The Supermotos have 17in wheels and are more road oriented than the DR400E but boy are they fun on the street...

The KLR will be better suited to the role of an actual dual sport and they tour quite well.

Welcome, I would say sit on both and see what feels better, as far as performance I think you will be happy with either.
