Anyone else from around here? I'm taking the MSF course Sept 22nd I CANT WAIT!!
I understand the need to start off on something small, but dont want to get bored of the bike too quickly i was thinking of trying to look for a used suzuki drz400sm i love the look of the bike, im 6'0" and only 140lbs i think it would be good size in dimensions and power.....thoughts?
The Dual sports are growing on me, but my initial inclination was to go with a sport bike, but so many of those seem too powerful for me and the ninja 250 seems it might be too short for my height so im leaning toward the dual sport. Let me know what you guys think.

Haven't really paid attention to dual sports since high school when my neighbor had an enduro, Yamaha 400 if I remember right. He also did local motocross. I've gotten up your way a couple times, nice country, nice weather. College town....ah, I too old for that. But welcome to the forum, someone familiar with those types of bikes will be along shortly I'm sure.

That DRZ will rock in SoCal. Are you anywhere near the San Bernardino National Forest? If so, I'll keep you busy on that dual sport for a lifetime. If you get a trailer and want to do some awesome desert riding you can run Rand Mountain which is out near the small ghost town community of Randsburg in the high desert.

OK, go to the Los Padres National Forest website. Go to recreational opportunities. Go to OHV. Here you will find all sorts of fun things to do with a wide range of skill levels. These should be within an hour of you.

More fun than a barrel of monkies AND a hottub of supermodels. (Cheaper to insure too...)

If you are looking for a bike that does no one thing great but all things well for what it is, look at the Kawasaki KLR650. The bike will do fire roads, open desert, highway and pretty much anything you can throw at it. There are more than a few people that actually tour on this bike and it will go dang near 300 miles on a load of fuel. It's pretty tough to beat a KLR when it comes to being a universal bike.
