Many years ago I shipped my Triumph Bonneville back from Spain where I had been touring. Somewhere on one of the roads between Philadelphia and Kansas I was riding late at night (mostly because I was running out of money and didn't want to spend it on a motel) and started into a turn on the blacktop road. About halfway into the turn my headlight picked up sand on the curve. I will never forget the next few seconds. I knew if I continued the turn I was probably going to wreck. I don't remember if I was aware of it at the time, but the ditch was really sloping and shallow. There was a woods just off the road. It was a pitch dark night but I can remember those trees whizzin' past both sides of the handlebars-kinda like the lyrics to the old truckdriving song. I missed every tree trunk and apparantly there were no low limbs because I didn't hit a thing.
An hour or so later I ran into a driver's license/ DWI check point. I had a Madrid license plate and an International driver's license and when I handed it to the deputy you would have thought it was covered in thorns or the plague germs. I decided that I had enough excitement for the evening when another sheriff's car stopped me at about 2:00 AM because of the "strange" plates so I got a motel for the rest of the night.

HSARTTEACHER: No, but sometimes I wished I would have kept it. My brother just had to have a bike so in an act of brotherly love I "sold" it to him for a song. I had a lot of wonderful experiences with that bike in Spain. On a side note, I started running a fairly hard to get oil in it after the break in. It was D-A speed/sport low ash oil. It cost twice as much as regular oil and after I sold it to my brother and gave him the oil I had left and he rode it for a while and then declared it must be really getting worn out. When he tore it down and miked the internal parts the wear was almost unmeasurable. Who knows?
