Hello All,

I don't have a motorcycle yet, nor do I have a license for riding one. BUT, I've decided to begin my adventure in obtaining both. I've already started reading up for my motorcycle permit, and then planning on taking the MSF course. I've even decided on my first bike, a Kawasaki Ninja 250r.

I figure since it's already late in the summer, I'll be ready to start riding by next spring. So my plan is to save up now (which I already am doing), do all the license and classes now. And I plan on buying the bike during the winter of the end of fall, apparently they're not as expensive during those times right?

I never thought of myself as a motorcycle rider, and then out of nowhere it just hit me, I got a rush just thinking about riding one. Immediately, I decided I wanted to have one. My father just recently got himself a bike he always dreamed of having (he's 50 now). So, maybe its just in my DNA. Who knows.

Welcome to the forum!

You can usually get a better deal on a bike in the off-season since demand gets a bit lower. The demand and prices tend to rise in the late spring.

Congrats on your decision! Look for the MSF courses available in NY. You should be able to fit into one this season yet and get that bit under your belt...

Welcome to the boards.

Hehe, Up in the more temperate parts of the country we get stuff called "snow" that makes it very difficult to ride. :) When this stuff covers everything it's time to put the bikes away for the winter.

I'm in Brentwood. I can't wait, but I know it's gonna take me a little while to save. I want to save up at LEAST $3,000. That way, I can buy a used bike, or that could be my down payment for a new one. It's gonna take me a little while tho.

Welcome!

A Kawasaki Ninja 250R is a great bike to learn on
You could possibly even try a 500CC bike if you think the 250R is too weak
But if you don't have any experience you should get a 250R :D

True Jordan...but another idea is to pick up a cheap dirtbike to practice with, and have fun at the same time. I remember a Honda SL70 I used to have a blast with and when it came time for a street bike I was way ahead of the guys who'd never ridden before.

Yeah,
So does that mean I have experience?
I ride a 100CC and 125CC Dirt Bike
Also a 660CC 4 Wheeler

I really can't wait until I get a motorcycle! :D

Now living in NC but spent my first 25 years in Brentwood. North Brentwood by Northeast Elementary school. My parents still live there. Good luck with your quest for a bike. Looking forward to hearing what you get and seeing pics.

I agree with getting the smaller cc bikes. Back when I started riding (a little over 4 decades ago), we could rent honda 50's. We didn't need licenses of any kind, and they were controllable.
I suggest that you buy one worth dumping. There is a learning curve. I can appreciate where you are coming from. I bought a bike about a week after I got back from my second tour in Nam. Buy a cheap low powered bike. Save some money. Dump a few times. Then buy a bike that's worthwhile. Many people end up in the hospital (or worse) because they try to tame a lion before they can teach a dog to sit. More important, why scrap a good bike.

Yea, a 250 seems like the good choice, but I plan on riding on the highway eventually about 17 miles to work. Would a 250 be ok for highway?

A Ninja 250 will be fine on the highway, especially for only 17 miles. I ride 90 miles to and from work and sometimes I consider a 250 because of the gas mileage.

Where in NY are you? I'm in long Island. Everyday I get more excited about getting the bike and feeling that exhilaration of riding it.

Hey, I am John, i live in Babylon, Tramas is the name of the school you want for your class. here is the site. http://tramas.com/

I took the class this past June. You want the basic riders course. $350. They have it at the SUNY Farmingdale Parking lot.

Good luck.

I was planning on going to Tramas Auto School. You know what's sort of a weird coincidence or weird world...I used to know the owner who recently passed away. I took Martial Arts when I was younger, and one of my friends from there told me how his father owned a school for learning how to ride motorcycles and such. I thought "cool" but whatever, I was like 9 so i didn't really care, but now, its crazy that I'm gonna end up going there. I remember sleeping over his house one time and his father really was passionate about bikes. So, I'm glad I'll be going there.

Hi, I'm Yuko and I'm not too far away from you guys. Astoria, Queens. I'm still bike shopping - looking for a SV 650 naked. no luck yet. If we all get our bikes soon, maybe we'll go for a ride out on suffolk or something. or upstate.

Dix Hills, LI here!

I too am looking to take the tramas course...but I hear there is a 4 month wait. I'll probably register in december for an April class. Hopefully picking up a used Yamaha V-Star 650 around that time.
