I built a stand/lift for my motorcycle this morning. I looked at several online resources and mixed and matched their techniques.

Parts:
1- 2x8x8 pine board
1- 1 3/8 in steel pipe, 5 feet long,threaded on the ends.
4- 1/4x2 1/2 lag bolts
1- Pipe cap to fit pipe
1- Floor flange to fit pipe
A few 2 1/2 inch long deck screws
2- Eye bolts

I cut the 2X8 into 2-3 1/2 foot sections and sandwiched them together with the deck screws.

I then drilled a 1 3/8 inch hole toward one end.

I used a hammer and chisel to mortise out a countersink for the flange and fastened it down with the lag bolts. I attached two eye bolts to either end of the board to use with tie-downs.

I screwed the end cap on one end of the pipe, then screwed the pipe through the hole in the boards. Done!

You just position the lift under the bike frame and push down on the handle. It takes hardly any effort at all!

Dods, give yourself an A for effort but add in the cost of your time, gas, wear and tear on your vehicle and you just blew right past the price point for a bike jack that Sears and others sell for like $54.

I got it all put together for less than $20. I can also store it up against the wall of my shed by removing the handle and hanging the wooden parts on a hook.

Dods, I say good for you, for building your own. :)

I have a set of stands, that I got in a trade of sorts.

My dad made a stand much like the one mentioned in the other thread, for trailering the dirt bikes around. That was some 30 years ago. Worked great!

With the bike jack you can lift the bike 15" off the deck, strip that thing down to bare bones, never worry about warping. material degradation, store it up against the wall in your garage, shed or whatever and know that bike is solidly lifted and movable while on the lift be it forward, backward, up, down or 360 degree turn.

You forgot to add you time and labor costs which in my case are huge...he,he

As far as time, it took maybe 30 minutes, including getting out and putting away the tools, and snapping the pictures.
Here's some more shots of the process and results.

Guys,

It's not about time and money. Well, ok it is a little bit, but it's mainly about a project and being able to complete it (with good result of course). I myself like building things that are not commonly in stores (or really expensive), so I take pride in what I build (and complete :) ). I'm pretty sure the same goes to you Dods, so hey - Kudos to you! Job well done.

Nice stand for bikes with motors nestled in the frame, any ideas where the motor is a stressed member, like most inline four metric bikes?

Looks great! How high does it lift the front tire off the ground?

About 2 inches on my bike. About the same for the rear when moved to the back of the frame. A strip of wood can be added to the top if more height is needed.

They also don't work worth a damn on 95% of the bikes out there. I have one and have found it ok for 4 wheelers and good for a transmission jack but it doesn"t work with my Ninja 500 or my CB750.

I don't have a center stand, so for doing items like changing out a wheel or checking the primary oil level I need to use a stand. I don't know if I could get that jack pictured under my bike or not. I have about 5 inches of clearance.
