Bought the Girelli for $25. and plan to put it on the road. I'm starting to see more mopeds and scooters on the road and want to welcome these riders to our forum. I hope this section grows in the coming weeks as more & more new riders choose scooters and mopeds for fun and economical travel.

Sanjay's packing a Piagio; Maico has a Girelli? OK I know about Piaggio, but I gotta go google the Girellli. Yeah that that about 5 times! What kind of shape is it in?

Well it's all there but some pieces are in a box. That's as far as I've gotten. I guess I need to take the "before" photo. I've had several mopeds in the past & really enjoy them as they're fun to get around on and can give a little exercise as well. Mileage is measured in mpp's (miles per pint) I actually see young people getting these more and more. In our state you don't need a motorcycle endorsement (no special test) so if you have a drivers license you can just buy one and take off. For college people and urban dwellers they're great because they keep up with traffic and can park anywhere.

I would have a moped if I lived in the city. I had a Garelli when I was younger, picked it up from the reuse center at the dump for free.

I'm hoping this site takes off! My wife who is nervous about me riding has even shown some interest in getting a moped with a basket on the back for running short distance errands.

Tons of mopeds here in Columbus, around the university area. Huge counter culture around the country with them too. A different note, I had an orange Solex moped when I was a pup. The front wheel friction motor. That was a humiliating ride.

Since I've gotten my scooter I can go weeks without driving my car, and I save a lot of money on gasoline. Unfortunately in my state a motorcycle license is required, so I had to jump through some hoops to ride it. It was all worth it in the end.

I see more and more here in South eastern PA too.

Several RV centers are now selling them.

They're very popular down south. After the state takes your license away for DUI's you can still roll on a scooter with a displacement of 50cc's or less. One dealership I worked at specialized in hot-rodding Tomos mopeds. We'd put on a stealthy 80cc top end, Dell'Orto carb and an expansion chamber. You could be the fastest drunk in town for about three hundred bucks! Drive by the tavern on payday and you'd see half a dozen mopeds and scooters out front.

I'm trying to find something he don't know all about:):) The dude has been around for sure. Fantic used to make mopeds with 125cc motors. The sachs engine I used in the Shark was a 50cc moped motor that had a 2-speed auto transmission....shifted into 2nd at about 15mph and would hit 50 easy.

Fantic mopeds...hmmmm....could you possibly graft the engine from a Fantic trials bike into one of their mopeds? I think they had a 250. You'd leave the hopped-up Tomos guys in the weeds with that!

Coming soon: Maico Shark's Girelli/KZ1000 conversion!!

Yes if only there were some futuristic device that could take a virtual snapshot of time and place it in some sort of digital format that could be shared visually over the inter-web.

...maybe some day :p

You might be onto something there! I might be interested in purchasing this technology, if some day it were to become available.

Nice! Will you do a full resto or just get it running?
Or maybe the full bling job with chopped forks and flaming skull paint. :D

Looks like you have a bit of rust to take care of there, but beyond that it looks pretty solid. I can't wait to see the finished project!
