Nice bikes! I had a neighbor that owned one, just left it rotting in his barn. I wonder if he still has it.

awesome bike.
i heard these are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars....is this true? why is that? what makes them so special?
Mezmo

mine is only a 2002, not quite sure if it's worth that much, but I sure am enjoying it. They were only made for a few years, like em or not, and that makes them at the least "uncommon" to see on the street.

They are not worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, as a matter of fact the gilroy are not worth much at all.

My grandfather had an Indian.
Many years ago I had one also. I wish I still had both of them. I guess they are still out there in the landfill or something.

Mezmo you still have the stock dual fire ignition on yours ?
Mezmo
09-10-2008, 09:35 PM
Yeah, ignition is stock. I've read about Thunderheart. What does the group here recommend?
uplander

I run the thunderheart single fire ignition on mine. Have not had any problems at all easy to install and program (I have curves available also link to some) also have some better curves we can program into your dual fire. or you can do yourself simple as a laptop and the right cable and the program :)

I love the photos of the Indians. If I could type a few things here If i could, about the Indian motorcycle company. I believe the Indian motorcycle company just opened a new factory/show room some where down in the south eastern United States. I went to there web site and looked at the new models and read some history. I believe it said there that the Indian motorcycle company predates Harley Davidson by a few years. Starting sometime after 1900. The company is also credited with the innovation of the gas tank that saddles over the frame. Or the frame passes through the molded tank. The design used on alot of other models and manufacturers since then. Also I don't remember the price of the bikes at all but i do remember that the cost of a textile jacket was around $400. I think the cost of the new Indians is on par with Harleys bikes. Looking at yours I think I'm going to have to own an Indian someday. Thanks for posting pics. If I'm wrong about info , please correct me.

Try Google search, and look at wikipedia. It mentions Gilroy (central CA) Indians, and a more recent incarnation, I don't know where.
Also many ads for parts and bikes.
Or try Google Image search, which will give you many px.

I should also mention I am now reading a book about Indians, "Rebuilding the Indian" by Fred Haefele, which I got at the library free but Powells has it for $6.95, probably worth it if you like stories about Indians.

It says there on their web site, Indian made the first V twin for a motorcycle.
I'll bet most people would think H D was the one with the first V twin.
Heres, cut and paste.
1906
Indian releases first American production V-Twin after several years of development and testing; 101 years later V-Twin remains most popular cruiser-motorcycle engine design
1909
Indian "loop frame" positions gas tank on front horizontal frame member, other makers eventually follow suit; basic configuration still used by virtually all motorcycles.
1914
Indian debuts world's first motorcycle with electric lights and starter; Cannonball Baker sets cross-country speed record on an Indian V-Twin 1922
Indian becomes first company in America to use "leakproof" aluminum primary cases; competition retains leaks for decades.
Competition I think is Harley Davidson.
Indians are American Originals , no doubt ww.indianmotorcycle.com

I absolutely love the classic look of the bike. It is too bad Indian was not able to make a go of it financially like Victory was.
