as the title suggest i have no clue what to do about a bike. I live in newyork and want to get my first bike soon, i got my permit while back and started doing classes for license etc...
i have ridden many times before on different class bikes and i feel most comfortable on sport bikes.
I'm a student as you can tell from my horrible sentence structure and gaps in paragraph so i am very poor so i wanna get a used bike for my first but not sure what would be a good fit for me. i figure if i listed my prefered riding style on here someone might be able to help.
I mostly enjoy cruising around not much of a speed hog, never gonna do tricks or anything of that sort, mostly gonna be used for point A to D travel kinda situation, just need somethign to get my from home to school to work without looking like i dug in trashbin to get it. prolly will never pull over 60 miles an hour. any suggestions on how to look for used bikes or a good year or types of bikes to look for would be apreciated.

Arigato in advance

Welcome to the forum! The Ninja 250, 500 and 650; GS500, SV650s, Versys, any dualsport and many older standards and sport bikes would work well for you. Each would meet your needs to pick the one you like best and/or can get the best deal on.

what about for gas efficiency, are sport bikes gas hogs?

The Ninja 250 will easily get 70MPG, and I've read of them getting quite a bit more if ridden them right. I think the Ninja 500 gets 60-65MPG?

My Ninja 500 gets anywhere from 50-70 depending on how I ride it. About 60 average.

The bikes I listed should all get above 50, except the "older standards and sport bikes" which of course depends on which older bike we're talking about.
