(I am posting here also in the hopes the extra traffic will get more advice.
Thanks for the help.)

Ok, I have done LOTS of research and have decided to start small, and used for my first bike. I have a couple of choices that I can grab this week. I am looking for econmical, adequate rides.

I can go with a '94 250 Nighthawk for around $1150,

or an '02 Ninja 250 for $1900.

The prices are total, in my driveway with tags.

Both have plenty of miles and are cosmetically nice.

I will be using it 3 or 4 days a week to go to work (about 15 miles total). And for the occasional errand. All in town milage, 30-50 mph. I am 5'11" and 200lbs.

I have sat on both, and they seem comfortable geometry wise. Especially since I do not foresee being on them for more than 30 minutes at a time, at the most.

My worry is, have I missed anything??
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

You're buying a first bike so it's impossible to know if you're buying properly or not. We don't know your risk tolerance nor your pocket book. So the criteria that I use to advise new riders, buy a bike you really like. Not just the looks of but also the feelings you get when you sit on them and imagine yourself riding one.

If you really like the bike you're buying, you're much more likely to spend a lot of time riding it. That's the most important thing, to ride often....ok well second most important. The MOST important thing IMO is to take the MSF beginning rider course because you will learn valuable motorcycle handling skills....then go out and practice them.

The other thing I would suggest, don't skimp on a helmet. You need a good one that fits well. Also a good motorcycle jacket and gloves can increase your enjoyment a LOT.

Either of those bikes sounds like a good deal, and you can't beat the nighthawk for $1150. Get whichever one you like sitting on better.

IMO the Nighthawk may be a little better for the driving you are going to be doing. The power is slightly smoother for a beginner. However comfort is KEY,and both are good choices!
