Hi guys! Great forum, and thanks for the "First Bike / New Rider" section!

I'm taking the MSF course in June, and am currently looking for my first bike. It will be for mostly in-town riding, and I'm not planning on taking it on the interstate that much at all, but still want it to be capable of easily reaching highway speeds (70mph). I'm looking for a cruiser.

I'm 6'2", 210, so don't want anything too cramped.

So far, I've been suggested the following options (looking for used variations of the following):
1. Honda Shadow 750
2. Suzuki Boulevard S50
3. Honda Shadow VLX

Right now, the Shadow 750 or similar is looking like the best option, in my opinion.

My concerns are that the Honda 750 may be a bit too much bike for a first bike. I have the same concerns for the Suzuki S50. I think the Honda Shadow VLX may be a bit small and underpowered (I've heard it's got some problems reaching highway speeds), and may not "fit" me too well. I've sat on a Shadow 750 and it felt good, or "right" ... but "right" for me with my limited experience is not very well defined for me at this point.

I will not be riding the bike I purchase until I get quite a bit of practice under my belt, both with the MSF course and by practicing on a friends' older 500cc cruiser (can't remember what it is exactly.)

Am I on the right track?

Thanks!!

I dunno, man. Given your size, so long as you can control that right wrist, the Shadows and Boulevards are generally well behaved. I know two guys in my town, one started on a Shadow and the other on a Boulevard and did just fine. Otherwise sounds like a plan. I wouldn't buy new for a first bike - too many things can happen - dropsies, etc.
