If this is not the right place to post this, please tell me!

I have a 1977 R100RS which had been sitting since 1990, and I recently convinced my wife to let me spend some money to try to get it running :)

Here's what I have done so far:
1) carbs were a mess, so I bought some 40mm CV Bings from a guy parting out a running 1981 RT
2) rebuilt the clutch
3) put in new points and plugs
4) new air and oil filters
5) and basically cleaned everything else

It had no battery, so I jumped it from my car and it actually fired up!

I adjusted the air/fuel mixture till it idled well, then rode it about a mile, and noticed valve noise, and it would not rev above about 3000. So, then I
6) re-set the valve clearances
7) installed a new charged battery
8) adjusted the ignition timing
9) replaced the condenser with one meant for a car

and now it won't start :(

It cranks and sputters and wants to start, but won't.
Carb bowls are full, spark looks good but hard to know, but no workie.

Anyone out there willing to walk me through some ideas?
Coils?
Wrong condenser?
Spark wires?

Thanks for any help,

cooch

I would vote coils though you say it appears to have good spark

Any thoughts on why it ran, then won't?
Is there any way to test coils first?

Thanks!

Well with it sitting for as long as it has there is no tellin as to why it ran and then doesn't but...I would re-inspect the things you changed after it ran the first time...the condenser for a car may not be that big a deal but I would also look there.

Ignition timing and valves may also cause this problem

Unfortunately, since it doesn't start, I can only do a static timing test, and I have no way to test the condenser.

The spark looks OK, but hard to know if its hot enough.
Guess I have to spend the remaining $$ on coils and wires.

Thanks for the help.

I would do the same:D

Just a thought. I've done this before. Is there any possibility that while wiring up the condensor that the wire is just barely touching ground?

Not sure what you mean by the wire touching ground, unless you mean that somehow the wire from the points to the condenser is somehow being grounded? It might be that, but I didn't notice anything.

I just replaced the coils and spark wires, and the bike runs again, so that must have been the main problem. Now on to timing...

thanks!
