It's a US company, but their helmets are made in China.:(

However, their construction and materials have always been top notch AFAIK. They have received excellent reviews. Web Bike World flat out says there is no reason to spend more money on better helmets, because.... there really aren't any.

Also, it weighs almost a pound less than the chunky fat-boy 4lb+ Nolan.

Sadly almost all manufacturers have their helmets made in china these days:(

I own and ride with on a daily basis a summit II and love it, 20k miles in it in the cold, rain and hot sun and not a single complaint and its lighter than my ARAI Astral X

I may take a look at it... although I was told the Nolan is not Chinese and is why I was leaning that way...

Sizing is a consideration when you can't try them on too... I have 2 HJC's. One is a 2X and the other is a large..... I think they were labeled backwards...

Thanks for the offer. Have one. Which is why I asked. :) I was actually preparing myself to get slammed for my helmet choice. My wife has a problem getting her eye glasses on, through the full face helmet.

You know you're never supposed to wear a helmet that's been on someone else's head for any period of time, right? So no used helmets, no sharing helmets, no letting someone else wear your old helmet, etc.

You know that, right?

Here's the thing.....

When you get a new helmet, all the foams (the shell and pads) are fresh and new. But as you wear it, it actually MOLDS to your skull over time. If someone else puts it on after that, it's not going to fit them the way it fits you. If you have ever noticed that helmets feel better after a few months, THAT'S WHY.

Now, if you ever NEED that helmet, and the foams molded around someone else's head, it's not going to spread the impact properly at all and can actually end up causing serious injury (maybe death) that would not have happened had they had thier own helmet since new.

Si

Looking to get a new helmet but not sure what brands to look at, an ideas?

Brands? No. Types? Well, it depends on your style. If you like full face I suggest a true full face. If you like having a visor just in case, I suggest a liftable visor type. I think bell is the state of the art, if you can find Simpson helmets they should be good.

Si
04-13-2008, 03:43 PM
Bell? Seriously? I suppose if you shop Walmart, yeah, state-of-the-art.

Simpson makes good helmets but they are really geared more toward car racing and their ventilation SUCKS!!!!!!!!!

There are lots of good ones. The most comfy helmet I've had was a KBC Vision Patriot. It doesn't move air that well, but it fits soooooooooo well, and it's the lightest helmet I have ever worn. My Gmax GM68 is the most well ventilated helmet I have ever worn. It's just amazing. And the shield is the clearest I have ever seen. I often reach up to close it and then realize it IS closed. I have had lots of different helmets, I have a couple Shoei's, a couple Arai's. My wife wears an Arai Mainframe Death From Above (she likes the funky people on it). But I am going to get her the GM68 for this summer because its ventilation is FAAAAR superior!!!!!!

I can give you a run down of a lot of different brands I have had experience with. These are generalizations, individual models may be slightly better or worse than others.

Gmax- Always been crap, until, that is, their newest lines came out (GM68) which bests helmets costing 5 times as much. Looks and feels high-end, but it's actually cheap as hell.

HJC- I have never like them. Their prices are lower middle range, but they look and feel cheap, they don't fit well, and in my experience, have uncomfortable pressure points.

Fulmer- Cheap, decent, nice liners, good cheap helmets. Nice fit.

ZOX- Complete junk, sizing is way off, lots of pressure points, I would feel safer without a helmet.

VMax- Surprisingly nice for the price. Just about the cheapest Snell helmet out there. These are what my kids wear. They offer great fiber composite Snell and DOT protection and they're cheap enough to buy new ones as the kids grow (~100). Crappy shield ratchets.

Bell- Bottom end to low mid range. Crappy shields with lots of distortion. The feel nice and fit well, but they are very round and the chin guard is way too close for lots of people.

KBC- A GREAT middle of the road helmet ($200+ range). You get the feel of a high end piece without the high end cost. They're It's better than a lot of the super expensive ones in the $500 range.

Icon- Right in along side KBC, maybe slightly more expensive sometimes, but no better. Great gear though. I have been thinking about picking up one of their new airframes.

Shoei- Good high-end gear. Expensive, but more money doesn't always mean better. A lot of the time it's just for status.

Arai- Same as Shoei

Nolan- High end price, stagnant tech. They are the old school of helmets. Most of their gear has the same features and tech helmets had 15 years ago.

Schuberth- Super high end, super expensive. Good helmets, but generally too heavy for me to wear. They fit very well and feel super high-end too! Like slipping on a $5000 custom tailored suit.

Shark- Same as Schuberth, but without the fat ass.

Of course, there are brands I have no experience with, but of the ones I like, I will only buy those until I find something better.

Hope that helps.

Odd that Bell is so low end, they've been around for such a long time and motocross guys used to use them. I'll be honest I don't know much about helmets, thanks for the information. I just know that full face makes my head sweat and I can't see very well out of them. I like my half shells. I use an Outlaw brand, that's actually the brand, Outlaw. Appreciate the information.

Whatever you do, please dont skimp on the price of your helmet. Sure you dont have to spend $500 on a helmet, but quality does cost a little money.

Have you checked out the Vemar Jiano? Its a really nice modular helmet that is rated as a full face helmet, rather than a 3/4" helmet like all the other modulars.

Plus its only $275.....

I happened to run into a guy and while talking to him, noticed he had a Vega Helmet... He let me look at it and didn't think it was a bad helmet... Still don't think it is bad for the price.

So while I was at one of my MotorCycle Shops, delivering oil yesterday, I noticed they had the Vega.. I am looking at a Modular..... Again, looked pretty good, especially for the price....

But I have to be honest.... I am looking at the HJC or the Nolan and the Nolan looks pretty good.. and is well under $300

I will have to look closer, I was kind of short on time...

And as I did say, the Vega was by no means a terrible helmet. I like some of the features of the HJC and the Nolan. If I am correct, the Nolan is a carbon composite material and the Vega is a glass helmet. And I have to be truthful.. "Made in Italy" over an Asian country pushes me more in that direction..

Well Nolan has as do almost all other brands even Vega a couple of shell construction types, you have the Carbon/kevlar/composit (usually top) then the polycarbonate/composit (usually mid and low lines) then there is the plastic helmets, now in testing oddly enough the even the low line in some have out performed the high quality carbon kevlar composite helmets...

The Vega and the Nolan N series are the polycarbonate/composite shell construction and typically the very high end race replica shells are the carbon composite...

That probably says it all right there...... I am cheap too, but a new engine isn't. I'd be spending 3 times more on Oil Analysis than I paid for the oil just to make sure it was working.

www.bestoil4you.com/files/g2156MCoilStudy.pdf Pick one of the Top 3 Oils in this Study and you will be able to sleep at night knowing that you are not taking a chance.

I always say, Reasonable results can be had with a Good Quality petroleum oil and a Good Quality Oil filter, Superior Results can be had by using a Premium Quality Synthetic Oil and a Premium Oil Filter.

Regardless of Brand, Always use a MotorCycle Specific oil with a JASO Rating of MA, Better yet, MA 2, but never MB.

This topic has seen a lot of responses.

I am an Arai guy. They're the best out there, in terms of quality, country of origin, padding, insulation, and ease of use. I ride with an older Renegade model, but I think I also have a Quantum that I ride with on occasion. I think the model Astra or Astral or something like that is what my dad rides with, but I find the windscreen to be too close to my face for comfort (my nose practically touches it.

I've found HJC's offroad helmets to be OK. They're a bit noisy and creaky but they hold both DOT and Snell safety recommendations, and they fit me well enough. I can say nothing of their road helmets. Country of origin on my HJC that I've had a few years now is South Korea. Who knows where they're coming from these days.

My first helmet was a Shoei, but these days they're even more expensive than Arai, and I actually like my Arai better anyway.

ah ok, I usually replace my bike helmet every 3 years if I haven't crashed it(unlikely the way I ride!) just wondering. $300 helmet every 5 years is $60 a year for use. Not bad for something that'll keep your noggin' from splitting open like a watermelon.

I sell both the Scorpion and the VEGA and $89.99 for 1 isn't retail its a discounted price 2 it is a polycarbonate shell (see plastic) now don't get me wrong as far as bang for the buck it sure is right up there at the top but the Veag Mach 1 is...Mach 1 Full Face Helmet

• SNELL M-2005 certified, meets or exceeds DOT standard.
• Fiberglass/Kevlar™ composite shell.
• Removable, washable comfort fit liner.
• Interior "Wick-Dri" fabric has superior wicking properties.
• "Easy-Com" system for headset speakers.
• High capacity forehead intake vents.
• Channeled interior ventilation for full airflow.
• Adjustable center and side chin intake vents.
• 6-position adjustable optically correct clear shield.
• Optional shields available in nine different tints, mirrors, or anti-fog coatings.
• Includes plush helmet bag with stylish Vega logo.

so if ya look there are quite a few aspects that make this helmet superior to the also very good Scorpion helmet.

It is, the individual certs are what the manufacturer builds for as well as pays to have done, no certification be it snell or DOT comes without cost but a helmet that is just DOT is typically not as good as a helmet that is both like the VEGA and other much higher line helmets....though VEGA does it for a whole lot less, even the Scorpion exo 400 is only DOT certified:D

Hey chrome i'm also looking to gear up. I want to get the best cheap stuff i can LOL meaning the most cost effective product that does its job.

What kind of bike? ninja250/500 or honda CBR 600F4
What kind of riding style? street
What are you looking for from a helmet? fits well and does its job when i need it to (when i crash) (i.e. what should it do)
what is your desired price range? 100-150

I am also looking at getting other gear too if you could help me. i am looking at spending around

Jacket-- 100-150
gloves--30-60
boots --100-130

so far i have looked at

Joe Rocekt Big Bang boots
Icon Superduty 2 boots

Shift Chaos gloves
Teknic hellion gloves (little pricey)
Joe Rocket honda licensed V5 leather gloves

Icon Alliance ss helmet

cortech tour master Gx sport series 2 textile jacket

Really want a jacket that is practical, has armor, looks good, in price range, and is leather if possible.

Anyone have any experience with Hawk helmets? Yes they're cheap but some of them are even Snell approved for under $100. I was looking at them here (http://www.leatherup.com/c/Hawk-Helmets/start_37/2/140.html).

I started with a walmart bell helmet that i bought just to road test a few bikes. (Bought my first bike last week) I ordered up a summit vega II and just got it. Love it, I wear glasses and this makes that operation much easier. I wanted a silver one to kinda match my bike but i found a store closing out the champagne colered ones and it was about $50 cheaper. So in the end i got a summit vega II, smoke shield and tear-offs for just over 100. (added the other items to break 100 for free shipping)

whenever you are talking about helmets- everybody's going to have an opinion. Of course, experience is not a bad teacher. It's good to know how helmets actually worked out - for people who rode with them. But keep in mind that the guys who had accidents on bikes - while wearing helmets - are often not included in the discussion. Riders who had serious accidents ... may no longer be riding. Period. So what you are getting is the opinions of people who are influenced by other stuff related to their helmet.

One site on the internet that is worth looking at is the Sharp site in the UK.
Here it is ...

http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/

The Sharp tests on MC helmets are now the most extensive and thorough tests on helmet performance. So it is worth taking the time to look at what they found out.

You can check a pretty wide range of helmets and see how they performed. Not all makes and models are there - but many major brands are covered.

You will notice, for example, that Bell helmets routinely score some of the highest safety ratings across all brands. They consistently get 5 stars for strength and safety ... and it's true for all Bell helmets! So that tells you that Bell is not cutting any corners in how they make their helmets.

Some safety ratings are surprising. I generally have a good opinion of Arai helmets, although I don't ride with one. But a few Arai helmets have low safety ratings. No kidding ... check it yourself.

Safety ratings are only part of the deal.
It's still important to get a helmet that really fits your head well.

Do your own research.
You may be surprised at what you find out.

distantThunder thanks for that link. I am in the market for a new helmet, I want to go high viz without spending too much $$$. Those ratings are definitely eye opening and somewhat of a relief. But it's def important to make sure the fit is good, and look for other features (good ventilation, removable liners etc)
