I've been riding cruisers for the past 12 years, and was finally able to afford a Softail last year. My wife has recently turned me on to sportbikes. I was breaking in her new 2008 Ninja 250R, and have become addicted.
I need a more powerful sportbike, and really like the looks of the XB 12R. I needed to know about what mpg I can expect if I ride reasonably close to the speed limit (50-55 mph on big city streets, 75-85 mph highway). I weigh 250 lbs and like to take off at a good pace, but never peel out or smoke the tires.
I was also wondering about the insurance on the bike. I'm a 31 year old married father with a clean driving record with a valid class M endorsement. I would appreciate any input from anyone who owns and rides one of these bikes.

Dunno about the XBs....I'm paying about $500/year for full coverage on my Cyclone through Progressive. I shouldn't think there would be a huge difference. Your best bet is to make a few phone calls, or better yet, check it out online.

I have the XB12R...garrr..and I am about 205 6'2" and 35 years. I get about 40 to 45 mpg, but I have the race ecm..etc. Never done one of either city or highway, always both. I pay like 45 bucks a month full coverage at State Farm.

i have an 04 xb12r and i get in the 50's for mpg. i also weigh 150 lbs, so that has something to do with it. if you go speed limit for a whole tank of gas on a country road (55-60mph) it will get 62mpg. that's the best i've ever gotten on my bike.
anyway, it doesn't matter what cc I-4 crotch rocket you get, it can't get worse than a buell gets, even with a heavier person on it. my friends cbr1000 gets 36. and he weighs less than i do.
good luck with whatever you get!

As for mileage......I get EXACTLY 139 miles before I hit "reserve".....if I ride fairly conservatively...you do the math. I don't know how much further I can go on "reserve" and have no intention of finding out, either!

rex, what year bike do you have?
the 06+ bikes have a larger fuel supply.
