View Full Version : Do you use a speed shift kit, or just hit it?

I know that you can buy a speed shifter kit, but I have also heard of others just hitting the kill for the time you shift, or ignoring it all together and just hitting it. I put this in racing, as i know someone here does one of the three. i do not want to get a speed shift kit, but I do want to take it down to Qualcom Stadium for some amateur racing for the hell of it and not profit. Will I damage my bike to upshift on the fly. I would never down, of course, without the clutch.

upshifting without the clutch is perfectly safe, if done correctly that is. theres a kinda technique to it you kinda blip the throttle (roll of slightly upshift then roll back on) but this is a very quick process, within fractions of a second. you roll off about a quarter of a turn, it easy to tell when you are doing it right bc its alot smoother than using the clutch. just practice. and dont force anything.

You need to let off the throttle to the point where the engine is maintaining a speed rather than either accelerating or decelerating. And you have to do this with very good accuracy in a very short amount of time, so it takes some practice.

I clutchless shift all the time. Drag strip, and motorcourse tracks. Knock on wood, my transmission has held up perfectly.

Can someone explain to me step-by-step how to do this? I'd like to give it a go... But I'd like to not destroy my bike in the process.

Hellfire pretty much summed it up...you have to de-stress the tranny to point where the next gear just "slips" into place...roll off throttle/shift/roll back on...

Ive done it by accident when I got some new gloves and totally missed the clutch lever, but it slipped right in...you basically do almost everything the same as you would if you were planning to use the clutch, but the action on the gas is much less pronounced...

oh, its also much easier to do at lower revs than at higher ones...practice with the revs low and you'll figure it out...
