I am new to motorcycles and recently learned to ride (on a Suzuki boulevard S 50, 800cc cruiser) . My neighbor has an near mint condition 1976 BMW R90/6, it has been sitting for nearly 15 years with less then 15K on it. I found a certified BMW wrench who can get it running and up to speed again and a good part source. My question: I like the classic nature of the bike, but would this bike good ride for frequent use? I know little about the model type but love the cool older BMWs and am hoping I can enjoy this bike. Thanks for input.

PS: Decent for a first bike or should I buy a second (24 years old, 6'1, 190lbs, rides generally under 50 miles, price range $1-$15000, (single army officer with deployment money) )?

How much is this guy asking for the R90? I've heard these older BMWs are reliable and easy to work on. I'm a big fan myself.

Afternoon McWideglide and welcome to the Forum! :D

Yeah, had me one of those, a 1976 R90/6 (900cc Boxer Twin) Beemer at one time with the full Wixom entourage too! :D Sweet bike to be sure. From your handle though I’m thinking Harley?! Yes? No? Or?? Got to admit I really hated the BMW R1200C when it first came out (and has since passed on), James Bond and all! But I’ve actually since come to like this extremely odd-ball machine and seriously wouldn’t mind having one someday (to keep my old Shovel company at least?!).

Enjoy the forum,
LRG

i am a BMW certified tech (was until breaking my neck and back anyways) and these airhead bmw's are the best motorcycles on the road, no question about it. 1 place you need to check is the rear drive unit lube level. then, before buying is to feel along the rear drive unit between the wheel and housing and see how badly it is leaking, if at all. if there is ANY oil at all on this surface you need to pull the magnetic drain plug and see how much if any steel shavings/chunks there are. if the level was low and/or lots of large buts of metal then you have a rear drive unit to either rebuild (hard if not impossible without a few of the BMW special tools are buy a refurbed unit (between 5 and 800 dollars or new at around 1100 dollars. also pull the drive shaft (VERY EASY JOB) and see what kind of shape the splines on the output shaft are in, if theyre ok put some of the bmw approved lube/paste/goop sparingly and youre good to go. properly maintained these bikes will get hundreds of thousands of miles on them before they need serious work on them.

I've owned a '74R90/6 since new & can highly recommend them.
Easy to work on, not too hard to find parts for & a delight to ride.
Mines currently stripped & awaiting the cafe treatment.
