i was just wondering if tireflys are illeagal in california. if you don't know what tireflys are they are screw on valve stem covers that light up. they come in various colors. you can buy them at your local target or wal-mart. costs around 4 to 5 dollars. just want to make sure i won't get any tickets for buying these lights.

Mornin' Heikapuuwai,

Hmmm, at least in the case of California (as former long-term resident) if I was in doubt about any laws and regs, I'd just give a call to the local Watch Commander (NON-emerancy number!) of the CHP and or County Sherrif and ASK! That seriously seemed to be the best way to go back then (before Home PC's). :D

On the other hand, seems like places like SD or OK, they pretty much leave ya' alone?!

bikes are not only to go fast. they also can look good too. stems that light up while moving makes the whole rim light up. when the whole rim lights up drivers (who mostly don't pay any attention to motorcyclist anywhere you live) will actually see you. where i live drivers hate on motorcycles. even though i live in a town that host one of Moto GP and Superbikes ect. Laguna Seca race track.

I have to tell you, I am almost 60 and very conservative, but, I put some red fireflys on my Virago and boy do they look cool when they light up.
The problem I have is that they don't light up unless you hit a solid bump to activate them.

Thats odd, I thought they were supposed to have a "g-swtich" in them. That way the force of them spinning connects the contacts and they light... hmm

I bought these REAL cheap at the last bike show and I guess you get what you pay for. I gave them to my son and he glued them onto his snowboard and they work like a charm.

I have found that Advance Auto Parts has a large selection of all kinds of "effects lighting" that can easily be adapted to a bike. A friend of mine bought a bunch of smaller lights from them and a remote switch from the discount bin in WalMart and now he can find his bike even in the most crowded of parking lots at night by just hitting the remote and walking over to the brightly glowing red Harley.
Respects,
Roadrash

I had tireflys on my bike over here, they were purchased in Florida. They looked great, made my bike really visible, shame they only worked for about 2 weeks. :(

I have flourescent red rim tape on my bike as well, the more visible you are the more likelihood of some dumb cage driver seeing you.

Idk I lived out by leguna seca for a while but I don't have an experience with having lights, I know that the 5 are pretty cool around there especially if you explained to them you want to be seen for safety reasons (just don't be breaking the law any other way!)
Anywhere but Monterey (those cops suck) I think they'll be cool

There is no law prohibiting them in California that I’m aware of. You just can not have red or blue lights that could be seen as an emergency vehicle. I don’t believe the a red or blue Tirefly would be fall into that category.

If you are running amber front and red rear you will remain within the lighting laws (state) as well as Federal.

I'm not trying to scare anyone out of getting "TireFlys" but I have seen those things to a number on valve stems. If you are going to use them inspect your valve stems first. If there is a hint that they are old, cracked and starting to dry rot DON'T PUT TIRFLYS ON THEM!!!! The added rotating mass will eventualy rip the stem right out of the wheel. I'VE SEEN IT HAPPEN!! My $.02

Yes, this has been my experience as will. I would also suggest that if you do run them buy the aluminum stem collar in an appropriate size to support the stem.

Dan,
I am planning on getting some of these tirefly's, do you think the chrome stems would help in this particular situation?

Thanks,

Thanks,

If I were going to run tireflys on my street bike(if I had one:D) I would find some ATV style screw on metal stems. You may be asking about the same thing. If so then yes they will help. The shorter the better.
