View Full Version : Modular Helmets
I'm strongly liking the modular helmet style. I like the idea of being able to have a full face helmet while still having the option to lift up the chin guard when stopped. Problem is, all the ones I see are DOT approved but not SNELL approved. I was told that Snell doesn't do any approvals on modular helmets which makes me wonder why.
Can I get some opinions, pros/cons, advice from those of you who have used both styles in the past?

Use the search feature. There is a guy on here, Showei Helmets that gave a very good and accurate explanation.

Thanks for the link. I did do a search for modular helmets and started reading the results but most of the stuff that came up has some small little reference to modular ... that's one that I didn't open. Sorry bout that.
okay, so yeah, he addressed modular helmets and the reason they're not Snell approved but ... i'd still like to start a discussion with people who use them. To be honest, the absence of a Snell rating may not be enough to dissuade me from using one so ... responses welcomed.

I think the question here is:
How strong can a chin guard be if it can be lifted up?
well as i said in my original post ... i like the option of having the chin guard lifted up while stopped.

This from the snell website....
Why won't Snell certify some types of helmets like flip up front designs?
Snell does not dismiss out of hand any helmet design that strays from the conventional. Snell does not point out any design specifications other than general requirements in our standards. We are however, always concerned with innovations and new designs that may effect the helmet's ability to protect the wearer, or in some cases the helmets potential to cause injury. At present the Foundation has not had the opportunity to test any of the flip up front type helmets for certification. We do not find any fault with these designs as long as they are used according to the manufacturers instructions and meet all of the requirements of the standard. We will also certify any size of helmet as long as it meets the same requirements as any other Snell certified helmet.

I think you're missing the point of my question. I'm saying if the the chin guard can be lifted up, could it be more dangerous whether it's opend or closed?
What if you were hit in the face and the flip up pivot mechanism failed and it the chin guard caused more harm than good? I'm not saying it would, I'm just saying that is something to consider.
Definitely something to consider. Good perspective. Sorry I misinterpreted.

I'm aware you're more concerned with safety. However I just want to say I use a 3/4 open as well as a modular.Strange as it may seem the modular I use makes more wind noise than the open face 3/4. This is the only modular I've ever had so maybe others are not like this one. It's a "hawk" helmet.A low cost helmet I got online for low bucks.

I have a Zox modular helmet. I haven't had any wind noise problems with it. Just make sure when you pull the modular part down it locks into place, otherwise a good blast of wind or some other jarring could force it up out of position. It's hard to ride when you can't see.
Absolutely. The ones I'm looking at are HJC. I may decide to skip it and just go full face but I just wanted to get some perspective from people who use them or have used them.
