I'm a new rider and am about to buy a 250cc street bike. I need all the gear.
1) What are all the different pieces of gear i'll need. i.e. helmet, jacket...
2) What are some good brands and models for those items that are not expensive.
I'm about 6'2" and weigh 210 lbs. I want to get "racing-looking" gear thats not super flashy or expensive. Thanks

Sorry, he, uh... "sells a few things". He has an introduction in the intro forum and you can send him a PM. I'm considering some gear myself and others on the forum speak well of him.

You want a DOT or a DOT/Snell approved helmet. You may find HJC and KBC helmets to be brands which meets the DOT standards, is a good helmet, not expensive and carried by most cycle gear suppliers. I own both HJC and KBC helmets myself. You probably want a full face helmet and I see paying at least $100 for a plain, but decent helmet. $250 and up once you get into the fancier helmets with the graphics and ventilation. I wouldn't trust a helmet you see in a magazine for $39. In my theory, with helmets, you get what you pay for and I think my head is worth a couple hundred dollars to protect. Some expensive brands used by many professionals and racers are SHOEI, ICON, and ARAI and you can expect to pay $300 and up.
A cycle jacket is your next item you'll want. You have leather and textile jackets with padding in the shoulders, elbows and back. Some brands to look at are Joe Rocket, Firstgear, ICON, Frank Thomas, Shift, Alpinestars. Leather and jackets with engraved graphics will be more attractive, but more expensive, but textile jackets will do the job and are less expensive. You then have to consider if you will be doing alot of riding in hot weather where a mesh style jacket will be more comfortable in the heat to a thicker insulated jacket for the colder weather. You may consider buying two separate jackets for the summer and winter, depending where you live and if you plan to ride all year around.
As far as pants, most riders feel fine just wearing regular jeans, but there are also jeans with kevlar added to them for added strength or if you are really serious, you can get a full set of leathers. I don't see you wearing chaps if you are planing to ride a street bike.
Gloves, also depending on the weather to what style you need.
Footwear - ankle high, leather work boots or gym shoes are just fine. Don't need to get fancy, unless you are racing. You basically want something wear you feel comfortable while shifting with your foot, so you probably don't want to use a pair of thick, steel-toed boots.

In buying your gear, consider you may have it for a long time. You may save a little now going cheap, but down the road you'll be trading up to get better gear when you find the cheaper stuff doesn't perform as well. If it's a choice between gear that offers more protection, err to the safe side, particulalry as a new rider. Lots of good vendors out there, reading reviews is helpful. I tend find the gear I want then watch for the sales.
