View Full Version : Heated long underwear: help?

I have the dubious distinction of needing to ride my motorcycle as deep as possible into a PA winter.

To further that, I intend to make "electric long underwear," plugged into the bike's electrical system. I figure that 500 watts (rheostat controlled) will be sufficient to keep me toasty.

What I'd like to know is what resistor wire has both a 15-ohm/meter (5-ohm/foot) value and is flexible enough not to break in riding?

Also, the additional 30 amps needed would probably overwhelm the alternator on my Honda Nighthawk 250. How much of a PITA would installing a larger one be? Would I be better off strapping a car battery to the back seat? (Though even that would only give me 80 min at max output).

Seeking help from the electrical engineers out there.

I've found a good pair of ski pants very effective down to at least 30 degrees, no electricity needed. And I've skied in them at even lower temps.
