View Full Version : Car tire on a bike

I thought I read a post about someone who put a car tire on a bike but now I can't find it. Maybe I'm mistaken.
Has anyone ever heard of such? I wouldn't mind getting more than 10k mi. out of a tire but not at the price of safety.

Try Avon tires. I have a set of Avon Vipers on my Triumph Sprint ST, about 20,000 miles and still going strong. I think I may get about 24-26,000 miles out of them. A car tire, if even possible, would be a very bad idea, I'd think.

I got one on mine. I put a Goodyear Eagle F1 (205-55-16)on the back of my VTX1800.
Yeah! check this link ---->http://lifeisaroad.com/stories/2004/10/27/theDarkSide.html
Plus theres stuff all over the net about it. I think it got started with Valkyire and Goldwing riders,(search Google) but, like one writer said, Motorcycle riders have been modifying their rides sinse they were invented, so, it's nothing new.
If you have a large enough wheel, you might be tempted by the darkside.

Okay, so I'm certainly no expert on this kind of stuff...but I still believe it'd be a bad idea to use a car tire on a motorcycle. Bike tires have a completely different profile to allow for traction while leaned over...that's just one fairly obvious (to me) difference that I would think could affect things. Also, from what I understand, bike tires are constructed using a much softer, "stickier" compound (which accounts for the lower expected life span) than car tires. Someone more knowledgeable could probably state some more precise effects.
This is just my opinion, and perhaps I'm full of it. It would be interesting to know for sure.

No idea here. I wouldn't stick one on then go try and tear up the twisties but for just normal cruising on a highway I would guess it be ok. The Boss Hoss motorcycles, the ones that have a Chevy small block, have a car tire on the rear.

Yeah, but see,...even on a regular bike tire, atleast on a cruiser, ya hardly EVER lean over so far that you're on anykind of sidewall. My old dunlap tires that came on the bike, had about 1 1/2 inch of flat right down the middle when it was worn out. No sign of wear on either edge. Now, I got 8 1/4 inches of tread on the ground on strights, and on curves, it doesn't go up on the edge,...it just sort of squashes over and I Still have about 7 inches of tread on the ground. ( I run at about 30 lbs. of air, thinkin' of trying 35)
Even those big ol' 240 tires ya see on choppers arent perfectly round. More of a big oval section profile.
Hey! I'm not an expert either, not by a long shot, but did you read that whole link? If anybody has miles of experience on wide back tires, it's that guy, ...and he convenced me.
It's not all that fool hardy, guys have been doing it for years, with, like VW tires and some bike tires with flatter than usual profiles. Infact, the modern round, really soft rubber bike tires you see now, result from experiementation on the track, BUT, alot of guys don't ride like their on a track. (;^)

Hey greyboyfan, thanks for the lifeisaroad link. It's cool. I'm gonna check out one of his books. That Val whatever bike that dude rides looks cool too. I'll read up on them too. T.

I think I will check out Avon tires. I don't think I'm quite ballsey enough to try a car tire on my FXDB with spoke rims. Maybe when I grow up and get a goldwing or something like it. T.

I'm sorry...I do not have the Avon Vipers on my Sprint ST. I actually have the Avon Azaro-ST, and I have Avon Venoms on my BMW R1200C. Avon does make a Viper, it's for high-performance bikes, and I can't say whether it's a long-life type of tire or not. Probably not as long of a life anyway...since I imagine the high-performance requires a softer, stickier tire.
Sorry for the bad info.

OK! Check it out. >>>-----> www.ephotospace.com/greyboyfan/
You'll have to click on "newest photo's" once you get there.
This shows what a "real" Darkside tire looks like on a VTX. and I've ridden it in rain, fast highway, slow parking lot "U" turns, everything,('cept snow) It's beautifull.
BTW, I chose not to go with the Yokohama, instead, I went with Goodyear Eagle F1 instead.
