View Full Version : The Great Fork Swap

I have a 1978 Honda CB750F that needs new brakes on the front. I have searched for brake parts online, but have not come up with any good replacement parts. Consequentelly, I have become curious about changing out the whole front fork - handlebars, tree, shocks, wheel, brakes, etc. I am new to motorcycle mechanics, however, and do not know about how universal the size of the neck receiver on the frame is, that is, where the fork attatches to the frame and the fork bearings are located. Is this a somewhat universal size so that I might be able to find a later model fork to slip right in? If not, is it unheard of to cut out this neck and weld in one from a later model fork? I hope this question is clear...and thank you for any input you might have.

What parts do ya need? Try here before you do drastic measures. http://www.oldbikebarn.com/ or https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index.php?model=cb750_sohc&category=x Let us know what you need and I'm certain someone here can find it or at the minimum know where to look. Ebay has all that stuff also.
Basically if the forks you want to use are the same diameter on the upper tubes as the original ones it should be an easy swap. Say you have a complete front end with 35mm uppers and the ones on your bike are 35mm on the uppers you can just loosen the clamps on the tripple trees, drop out the old ones and swap in the new ones. By doing it that way you won't have to mess with the head bearings and figuring out what lenght of stem it needs to be and no cuttin' and weldin'.
As long as they are 7/8" bars they will fit your bar mounts.

I've checked both OldBikeBarn and Partsnmore and found the same on both - lots of great parts for most everything but 77-78 models. I believe that I need a master cylinder (or a rebuild kit). Thank you for your advice. I will have to keep thinking about the best plan of action....

Be a whole hell of a lot easier than swaping out the whole front end that's for sure.

I am not sure what tube dia. your 750 is but my 82 CB650 is 35mm and I hear the CBR600 from the late 80's-91 or so is 35mm and dual disc. I have yet to be able to confirm this by taking some calipers down to the junkyard, but I thought I would throw this info out there and see what happens.
If it is true we should be able to just loosen the triple clamp and replace the new front end from fork tubes on down. Might as well throw in braided lines and such while I am at it.
